Location description:
Our Diving Points:
*Shark Bay
Shark Bay is easily reached by land. The dirt track leading practically to the water`s edge splits off from the main road about 4km north of Na`ama Bay. The powerful flood waters that occasionally burst through the wadi here have cleared away all rocks and debris for particularly easy access to deeper water. As in the case of The Tower and The Eel Garden, the flood waters have created a channel through the reef leading to the canyon characteristic of such sites. This time, the canyon starts after a short sandy slope littered with rocks. A low wall rises up to the right of this expanse, while a 50º perpendicular slope towers on the left.
The canyon itself becomes very steep with sudden rapidity - which makes diving it so exciting. It has a bottom depth of 45m (148 feet). Your recommended route leads to the right, bringing you to a slope situated at 25m (82 feet). Large coral outcrops cluster densely here, set off by stark white sand patches. Past the slope lies the reef wall, which may be followed back to your starting point. The left side of the canyon has a very different character. A sandy coral-encrusted slope E leads out towards the northern corner of the bay. Once upon a time, you could meet sharks cruising past here on a regular basis. Even today, viewing a couple of sharks or a manta at this point comes as little surprise. Umbarak Sharks Bay Resort and dive center is located up on the beach, for all your diving needs. Visit it if you like before or after completing your dive.
*The Gardens
The bay bordering Na`ama Bay to the north is probably the oldest diving region in the area. Because of its proximity to Na`ama, diving began here, in The Gardens, long before the hotels, commercial dive centers and live-aboards first appeared. The veterans of Na`ama used to come here on foot, and on flat raft-like boats, so it is perhaps natural that the nearest corner to Na`ama became known as Near Garden and the furthest, Far Garden.
Coral outcrops cluster around the large sand patch towards the middle of the slope. This is an excellent spot for night dives, as you will no doubt discover.
*The Tower
The name of this site derives from the rocky cliff lying perpendicular to the edge of the reef. Your recommended dive route takes you through the canyon at a depth of 20m (66 feet). Here you will be able to see a picturesque cave on the left hand side, populated by glassfish. Proceed east from the cave along the base of the slope to observe its many coral outcrops close up.
*Ras Um Sid & The Temple
Ras Um Sid is named for the head or cape (``ras`` in Arabic) which juts out to sea. It is located 7km (4.3 miles) south of Na`ama Bay and borders on Sharm El Moya which is where the local fleet of dive-boats anchors, although the neighboring Sharm El Sheikh actually serves as the port of entry here. Ras Um Sid is easily accessible from land.
*Ras Mohammed
*Strait of Tiran
*Wreck of Thistlegorm
...and many more!
