Location description: Dahab`s beauty is, to many, not immediately apparent, but even those spending only a week in the place seem to be affected by the spirit of Sinai - such a magical, historical and holy land. And, of course there is the excellent diving…
Diving is now the prime reason that people visit Dahab. Originally infamous as a hippy hangout, diving had not been explored as an industry and it wasn`t until 1991 that the first diving centre was opened. Now there is an ever-growing colonisation of centres - almost 60 at present, and to some it may appear that Dahab will develop into a mirror image of Sharm El Sheikh.
For the most part, diving in Dahab is limited to a handful of sites and this number is reduced even further when strong winds make conditions tougher. The Canyon and the Blue Hole are the two sites that have made Dahab infamous for deaths of divers exceeding their limits. These sites are by no means death traps when dived properly and when staying within recreational limits, but unfortunately not everyone is satisfied with dives within 30 metres. The recent introduction of Technical Diving facilities will hopefully improve the survival rate of those drawn to the Arch at the Blue Hole.
Around Dahab we have many wonderful dive sites: Um El Sid, Three Pools, Golden Blocks, 7 Pinnacles, Lagoon, Islands, Southern Oasis, Shark Caves, Lighthouse, Eel Garden, Canyon, Blue Hole, Bells.
Dahab lies alongside the deepest section of the African rift, the giant crack in the earth`s crust that formed the Red Sea. The jagged mountains above sea level continue at much the same angle underwater, forming a dramatic seascape of valleys and canyons. Not surprisingly, given the crystal clear water and ideal deep diving conditions, it has gained notoriety as a diving accident black spot. Many have lost their lives trying to test their limits. This is the curse of Dahab. Club Red, like most of the local dive centres, goes to great lengths to ensure their customers dive safely. Apart from the bay of Dahab and the Lagoon which have sandy beaches, the whole coastline is actually a dive site. Wherever one dives, corals and fish can be found in abundance.
Also available boat safaries. SS Thistlegorm is one of the best wreck dives in the world. The WWII British supply ship was hit on October 6, 1941 by a German bomber. She now lies in 30m deep water in an upright position and stands 18m clear of the seabed. Despite the years, much of the cargo on board remains intact. It provides divers with an inexhaustible source of thrilling surprises and discoveries. Included amongst the historical cargo are rows of BSA motorcycles, Bedford trucks, machine gun shells and even a locomotive.Club Red has been operating boat diving Safaris to HMS Thistlegorm since 1997. Thistlegorm is an adventurous dive for experienced divers. A briefing is given the day before by our professional safari divemaster.
