Company description KOH TAO HISTORY The history of Koh Tao involves a rather stunning transformation. From its existence as an isolated political prison in the 30s, Koh Tao has evolved into a haven for travellers from around the world. The first generation of settlers arrived on the island in the early 1950s, a few years after all the prisoners had been pardoned and released. Their seafaring odyssey might sound a bit far-fetched in this age of high-speed boats and airplanes, but these early settlers had to spend more than 12 hours crossing over from Pha-ngan Island, 45 km away, on sailboats. About 15 years ago, the first batch of tourists turned up on the island. Words about its unspoiled beauty - its many beaches and bays as well as a long stretch of coral reefs that surrounds the island - are passed on from one tourist to another. The number of visitors has increased steadily, from fewer than 50 a day a decade ago to more than 200 a day now. At this moment, it is no exaggeration to say that Koh Tao is reserved as a place on the world map of must-see places for both holidaymakers and adventurers worldwide. Koh Tao`s distance from the mainland - the island is 85 km from Chumphon province and 120 km from Surat Thani - once served as a perfect shield, thwarting prisoners from escaping. Another benefit, more evident at present, is it prevents any waste or pollution to wash on the beaches. That is why Koh Tao is known as one of a few places where you can enjoy extremely clean and limpid seawater.
