Company description
West Side Scuba Centre, established in 1993, is in the tropical surroundings of the Baku Beach Club. A full service beach club whose staff is known for their friendliness and attention to the needs of divers. The beach club offers two restaurants, a bar, nightclub, restrooms, pool and easy access to the shops. Located close to some of the most beautiful reefs on the west coast of Barbados this makes for ideal diving and exciting adventures.
All of our reefs have mooring buoys, we do not drop anchors. We are an Eco-dive facility.
With high safety standards, our attention to detail and small dive groups, you are sure to enjoy our underwater world. Our dive team is made up of three dive instructors and four experienced dive guides. All of our dives are led by a PADI certified divemaster. Our staff are trained in medical first-aid and are there to assist should the need arise.
We are open for year-round diving with some of the best conditions from November through September. Daily trips are offered seven days a week. You are sure to enjoy our varying water temperatures from 78 degs f - 84 degs f. There are in excess of 20 prime dive sites which can be reached within a 10 - 20 minute boat ride from the dive centre.
West Side Scuba Centre also offers dives for visiting cruise ship passengers. Only 20 minutes from the harbour, transport provided.
A fully equipped decompression chamber is located close by and two hybaric doctors are available 24hrs a day.
Barbados` reefs offer some of the richest variety of fish and coral found in the Caribbean. Shallow reefs and wrecks are ideal for the novice, while deeper reefs and wrecks will be sure to tantalise and challenge the experienced diver. For those wishing something a little less challenging we provide snorkelling trips to a shallow sunken barge and a beautiful reef abundant with marine life including schools of fish friendly enough to fed by hand. A unique snorkel and dive trip that features a close-up look at sea turtles is also available.
We offer:

This is followed by a session in the pool where you will have a chance to practice some the skills required of the new diver. It also gives you plenty of time to adjust and get used to being underwater in a controlled environment. Finally the new diver takes to the open water on a 25 foot (8 meter) wreck and reef dive.
*PADI Openwater Course
A PADI openwater course usually takes four to five days. The course is broken into five modules. Each module consists of an academic session, a video session, a pool or practical session and 4 openwater dives in the sea.

Location description:
There are 4 different wrecks that West Side Scuba dive, 2 marine parks and a turtle park. The most famous of the wrecks, the Stavronikita, has created a fascinating penetration dive for experienced divers. We also do twenty reef dives, from the south to the north. And in summer we also dive on the East Coast.
The most popular dive sites:
*Stavronikita
The ``Stav`` as it is commonly known starts at 20 feet at the top of the fore mast which itself is covered with different corals and lots of Sergeant Majors. As you go down the mast you encounter groupers and snappers around the bottom of the mast. The wreck is well intact even though she has been down since 1978. This wreck can be dived in two ways, from the prop up through the ship with a maximum depth of 130 feet, or along the deck and though the cabins with a maximum depth of 100 feet. Lots of sponges and black coral have grown on her. By the prob you can find lots of sea whips.
Depth of wreck: 20 - 130 feet
*Stav Reef
This reef runs just behind the wreck of the Stav It is home to barracuda, snapper, cavali, a spotted moray and smaller tropical fish that can be seen darting in and out of holes in the reef. Very nice corals and sponges.
Depth of dive: 80 - 90 feet
* Fishermans
This reef is home to many tropical fish and covered with different coral, sponges and plants. There are usually large schools of chromis and creole wrasse converging on the reef. Divers sometimes encounter turtles, barracudas and all kinds of snappers with the odd mackerel and cavallies.
Depth of dive: 70 - 90 feet
*Sandy Lane
This reef got its name because of its location, directly off the Sandy Lane hotel. Barracuda and other smaller tropical fish frequent this reef. Lobsters can also be found on this reef but they are usually hiding in cracks.
Depth of dive: 90 feet
*Great Ledge
Despite its depth there is always a lot of light and colour on this reef. It has a large selection of plant and coral life. This reef is usually frequented by barracuda and mackerel, Atlantic spadefish and is also home to a large number of the smaller tropical fish.
Depth of dive: 55 - 80 feet
*Bright Ledge
This, being one of the northern most reefs, is alive with fish. The reef is usually frequented by barracuda and bar jacks. There is usually a turtle or two on this reef most of the time. The reef boasts a large variety of coral and sponges. From its name you can guess that it is always bright and colourful.
Depth of dive: 50 - 100 feet
