Location description: The Best Dive Sites (as voted by our readers)
1. Black Jack Hole
Depth: 5m - 50m (16ft - 160ft)
The drop off point is in a small sheltered recess in the rocks, where the surface is calm and the depth only about 5 metres (16 feet). From this point the divemaster will head directly out to a ridge only 5 metres (16 feet) or so away. Once past the ridge, the reef slopes downwards to 50 metres (160 feet) and beyond. Because of the sloping reef, this is an ideal dive for both advanced and in-experienced diver. Once the depth of the dive has been achieved, the divemaster will turn right and then begin a slow and gradual ascent. Usually there is limited drift here, and the sights are well worth the visit. The reef is covered with coral, and its also heavily populated with fish. But don`t just watch the coral, look out into the deep water for Eagle Ray`s and Barracuda just passing by. Turtles, Pufferfish, Lobster and Moray`s are often found here.
The dive should finish before passing the headland which leads into Kelliston Drain, on a flat plateau where the sand bottom came up to meet the rock at about 12 metres (39 feet).
2. Diver`s Dream
3. Picker
4. Angel Reef
Depth: 3m - 25m (10ft - 82ft)
The sloping nature of this dive makes this a perfect dive for all levels of diver including Resort Courses, as we can decide what our maximum depth will be, and just follow the reef upwards. One word of caution though, our experienced divemasters know that at the end of this dive the currents can pick up. We tend to either make sure we complete the dive prior to this point at the far tip of Goat Island, or turn in at the rocks and finish the dive in a quiet flat plateau amongst the rocks. Expect to see large amounts of coral, with very few sand patches, and lots of Parrotfish, Surgeon, and Wrasse amongst others. This is one of the most beautiful reefs to be found in Tobago, and when the sun`s out and the visibility is good, you`ll understand what I mean.
5. Japanese Gardens
Depth: 10m - 42m (32ft - 137ft)
This is one of those dives that every wants to do, it just has a bit of everything. The dive starts on the southern point of Goat Island, between Chinese Gardens and before Angel Reef. A short outcropping of rocks from Goat Island marks the start point, and we drop into the water to meet the reef at about 10 metres (32 feet).
This is one of those dives, where you will be dissapointed if there is no current. As you`re pulled along the top of the reef, you have an oppurtunity to marvel at the colours below you. And just as you think your about to be smashed into a set of rock in front of you, there are two breaks in the rock. One is slightly narrower (and crooked) than the other, but both serve the same purpose, to slip you through into the calmer water of the other side. Don`t worry if you miss the `Cut`, because you can travel round the outside, but it`s not as much fun.
