Location description: Tobago is a small island 26 miles long by 8 miles across (42x10 kilometres) and is 10 degrees north of the equator. It is 21 miles north east of Trinidad and is close to the east coast of Venezuela. It is a dormant volcanic island and is part of a sunken mountain chain, related to South America. Tobago is one of two islands that make up a nation - Trinidad and Tobago (commonly known as T&T) and they are governed as one country.
The central highlands are covered in dense rainforest that is intersected by river valleys and waterfalls. The island is covered in lush tropical vegetation. The winding coastal roads pass many bays, deserted beaches, tiny fishing villages, and stunning Views and panoramas. The road across the island climbs steeply inland to the central mountain ridge and the rain forest. The coastline varies from gently sloping coral-sand bays, rocky cliffs to more open windswept stretches on the Atlantic side. The offshore coral reefs teem with marine life and are a delight for diving and snorkelling. There are also a few much smaller islands off the coast that have been protected as sea bird sanctuaries.
Tobago enjoys all year round sunshine and warm temperatures (average 30C, 86F). The wet (rainy) season is from June to November. This does not mean monsoons or constant rain for these months. The tropical downpours usually happen in short sharp bursts, clearing quickly and returning to warm sunshine. During this time the vegetation grows rapidly and the whole island is green and lush.
There are two very different and contrasting sides to the island . The Atlantic (windward) coast has some great beaches which are good for sunbathing when calm but better for walks and beachcombing when windy and can have strong currents, rough seas, and spectacular scenery.
The Caribbean (leeward) side is generally calmer with many beautiful horseshoe bays, dotted along the coastline. Some beaches are completely deserted and have a natural charm, whilst others have more facilities for the visitor. Trees and palms provide optional shade on most beaches, and there is usually a cooling breeze. You can relax, swim in the crystal clear warm waters, snorkel near shore, be mesmerized by the waves, watch clouds race across the sky, or watch pelicans swoop and dive for fish close by.
The Rainforest
Tobago has a fabulously unspoilt, virgin rainforest. The nature reserve has been established since 1764 and is the oldest legally protected rainforest in the world.
Tropical rainforests are the most diverse eco- systems on earth because of the incredible numbers of animal and plant species, and are vital as a possible source of new drugs in the future. It is a fascinating place to visit, full of colour, intriguing noises, beautiful birds and magnificent trees - some of which can reach 30 - 50 meters (165 feet) up to the top of the canopy. The reserve covers over a third of the island and there are many walks and tours available.
