Our History: After being on Curacao, an island of 60km in the Dutch Antilles for 6 years, we, Martin & Brenda van Gestel thought it was time for a new location. Having totally enjoyed teaching so many people the joy of diving in the beautiful waters of Caribbean side of Curacao we then decided to head towards Asia.
The Tran Siberian express was a major goal in our travels. But as you can see, our plans changed, this is nothing new, and people who know us aren`t really surprised any more.
We sold our dive shop Silent Immersion to an Irish couple and before we started our Asia adventure we decided to go to Costa Rica. Assuming that once we would be in Asia the opportunity to visit this beautiful country would be very small. Costa Rica captured our hearts. The diving here is fantastic, especially the abundance of big fish, like sharks, manta`s, rays, dolphins, and even whale sharks.
Next to diving this country has so much more to offer. Nature is just awesome in this country!
After visiting Rich Coast Diving in Playas del Coco, we knew we had found our destiny. With great support from Jessica Bradford, the previous owner and the crew, we were able to pursue our hopes and follow our heart. We went back to Curacao to pick up our dogs and parrots, and now we are the happy owners of Rich Coast Diving and hope to be able to show many people the joy of diving in Costa Rica.
We hope that we can give many divers from Silent Immersion a new dive home away from home, and of course we will make sure that all the divers who will join us on our trips will get that homey feeling as well!
Location description: We regularly see Southern Stingrays, Spotted Eagle Rays, a variety of eels, White-tip Reef Sharks, tons of Puffer and Porcupine Fish, Octopus, turtles, Seahorses, lobsters, Nudibranchs and numerous schools of many different varieties of fish. At the more advanced sites: the Catalina Islands, and the Bat Islands, we commonly see many larger animals such as Giant Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, and Bull Sharks.
On the surface we often get the pleasant surprise visit by dolphin pods and pilot whales!
There are various kinds of small coral formations, which include both soft and hard sponges, as well as an unparalleled array of marine plants. They grow on the amazing volcanic rock formations that make up the remarkable bottom topography here.
One of the local sites that we often go to, Tortuga, has a cute 30 ft. fishing vessel called ``Rusty II`` at about 70 ft. There are many stories explaining why it sunk, but ours is definitely the best!
The average range of visibility is 15 to 60 feet (5 to 18 meters) depending on the amount of plankton the tides bring in for the big fishiest.
The night diving here is incredible! All the marine life that is napping during the day, such as the 6 ft. moray eels and octopus roam the waters creating a spectacular show!
Everyday we take our 35 ft. trimaran, `Tahonga`, on the 2 tank local dive trip. It has a very large and comfortable deck with a large shade roof... because we don`t need to see any lobsters on the surface only on the dives... Our Catalina and Bat Island trips are aboard our 30ft Boston Whaler, `Banana Nose`. With our twin 225hp engines, we get you to the sites in no time!
(we also have over 16 different boats available for charter)
We have 20+ which are located only 5-15 minutes away on a leisurely boat ride. There are also about 6 named sites at the Catalina Islands, 45 minutes away. And about 5 named sites at the Bat Islands which are about an hour away. However, the ocean is endless, so there is plenty of potential to explore.
