Utila attracts people from around the world to dive and snorkel it`s extensive reefs teeming with colorful fishes, corals, sponges, lobsters and much more marine life, including the elusive whale shark!
Ruins on all three of the Bay Islands indicate that they were inhabited well before the Europeans arrived. Christopher Columbus, on his 4th voyage to the new world landed on the island of Guanaja on July 30th, 1502. He encountered a fairly large population of Indians whom he believed to be cannibals. The Spanish enslaved the islanders and sent them to work on the plantations of Cuba and Gold & Silver mines of Mexico.
They did not stay empty for long, however. English, French & Dutch pirates established settlements on the islands and raided the cumbersome Spanish cargo vessels laden with gold and other treasures from the new world. The English buccaneer Henry Morgan established his base at Port Royal on Roatan in the mid-17th century; at that time as many as 5,000 pirates were living on the island.
The PADI Open Water Course is the entry level scuba course to enable you to dive (with a buddy) in open water. The course certifies you to dive to a depth of 60ft/18mtrs.
The course lasts 4 days and consists of no more than 6 students and may be started almost anytime. A 3-day course is also available for those on a fixed schedule.
Courses in German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese are available in addition to English. Unlike other shops here we concentrate most our diving on the North side, generally considered the best diving due to dramatic walls, drops offs, and also where the very timid Whale Shark is commonly found.
The current price for this course is $199USD as of September 2004. All dive gear and certification card is included. Accommodations are available for $3/night.
The PADI Advanced Open Water Course lasts 2 to 3 days and consists of 5 dives including a Deep Dive, Navigation Dive, and 3 elective dives. The elective dives to choose from include the following: Multilevel Dive, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drift Dive, Wreck Dive, Naturalist Dive, and Night Dive.
The Advanced course is recommended for Open Water divers and can be started immediately following the Open Water Course to continue your education and improve diving skills & knowledge. It also certifies you be cleared for deep dives to the maximum recommended depth of 130 feet/40 meters.
The current price for this course is $199USD as of September 2004. All dive gear and certification card is included.
