growth and marine life rivals any destination in
the world. The turquoise water has a crystal
clear visibility that normally exceeds 100ft.
In 1996, Cozumel`s reefs were declared a national
park and now are protected. As a marine refuge,
it is prohibited to take, break, damage or destroy
any marine organisms.
Cave / Cenote Diving
The Yucatan peninsula is home to the most famous cenote / cave system in the world.
Cenotes, pronounced (say-no-tay), are caves that flooded after the ice age when the water level rose. The whole Yucatan peninsula consists of limestone. During the ice ages the water level sank and the rainwater permeated the porous stone, forming caves, passageways and huge domes. These cenotes are actually underground rivers and form the largest interconnected cave and cavern system in the world. They are filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal clear water. Although they are an overhead environment, cavern dives always stay within the limits of natural sunlight and are limited to groups of 4 divers with a guide. You need only be certified as an Open Water Diver to cenote dive and experience the beauty.
