Company description
Abucear.com is Nicaragua’s first and only locally owned and operated PADI Dive Shop! Owner/Operator Fidel Lуpez, a fully certified PADI Dive Instructor, is a native of Nicaragua who has dived extensively in Central America, both in the Caribbean and the Pacific. If you are already a diver or are ready to learn, Abucear.com is a perfect opportunity for you to combine this uniquely aesthetic sport with discovering Nicaragua, a yet unspoiled country where the warmth of its tropical sun is equaled only by that of its people.
Fidel has twelve years of experience leading diving trips in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean throughout Central America as well as in Volcanic Lakes within Nicaragua.
After opening successful dive operations on Little Corn Island and Laguna de Apoyo, Fidel Lуpez recently established a full-service dive shop in the Pacific Coast village of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. San Juan del Sur is a small, yet lively, fishing village located 20k north of Costa Rica and two hours south of Managua. The village is situated on a small bay with a long, sandy beach that is perfect for adults and children for swimming in the ocean or playing in the gentle waves.
The name of the Laguna of Apoyo comes from the Dirian word for the flavor of its water, Alt- poyec, or salt water. The Spanish colonist Oviedo visited the lake in 1529 and indicated the salinity of its water, and according to his writings, there existed an ``abundant fishing advantage in flavor and number compared to the fish of all the other lagoons``.
We usually dive at depths between 3 and 20 meters (20-60 feet.) The visibility is generally 30-80 feet and there is an incredible abundance of marine life due to the nutrient rich waters flowing up the west coast. You will encounter schools of fish at every site and bottom dwellers, including rock fish, starfish and lobsters, that are very abundant and exotic. Moray eels are prolific with a variety of species such as jewel, zebra and tiger. Also, depending on the season, you are likely to see turtles, dolphins, rays and other larger species.
The experience: Fidel is a talented and patient guide who is very passionate about the sport of diving and eager to share it with anyone who is interested. Your happy experience will begin when you step into the dive shop and continue until after you have relaxed and shared stories following your dive. Fidel speaks English fluently and invites you to come to Nicaragua to learn to dive, to earn an advanced certification or to join him for a memorable dive experience in the Pacific Ocean or a volcanic lake!
Other things to do in San Juan del Sur: Along with the spectacular diving, San Juan del Sur also offers world class sport-fishing and surfing.
Location description:
Laguna de Apoyo is a scenic and ecologically protected volcanic lake in Nicaragua that is located near the historic cities of Granada and Masaya. The Laguna is the perfect environment for learning to dive or enhancing your current diving skills. The water is warm, there are no waves or currents, and the water becomes gradually deeper as you swim towards the center of the crater. All courses and dives are led by Fidel Lуpez BriceÑo, an International Instructor for Recreational Diving. To request available dates or to make a reservation please phone or e-mail our shop in San Juan del Sur!
The History and Surroundings: Laguna de Apoyo is the result of a volcanic eruption that happened over 21 thousand years ago, and is considered the largest one to occur in Nicaragua over the last one hundred thousand years. It has a diameter of 6 kilometers and a depth estimated at 200 meters.
In the Pre-Columbian period, the coast of the Laguna de Apoyo was found surrounded by native towns, but as the waters of the lake rose, our ancestors were forced to move to its present settlement.
Norome, situated in the north edge of the Laguna de Apoyo, is the site many archeological finds. An enormous stone idol, possibly tied to some native ritual or belief related to the lake, various stone hieroglyphics, and “the sacrificial altar of the indigenous Dirianes†have been discovered there.
The forest that surrounds Laguna de Apoyo is comprised of many precious trees that provide accommodations for the abundant natural fauna: howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, armadillos, guatusas, raccoons, pizotes, deer, jaguars, magpies, zanates, golden orioles, saltapiÑuelas, gÑŒises, chichiltotes, sensontles, guardabarrancos, among many others. The water of Laguna de Apoyo contains guapotes and the mojarra flecha, whose scientific name is cichlasoma zaliosum, a unique species in the world.
