Company description Blue Sea Charters operates out of Madang. One of the prettiest towns in the South Pacific, Madang offers a wide range of easily accessible dive sites and is also the prime location from which to access the remote outer islands and reefs.
Some words about our boats.
*M.V. Moonlighting II is currently Madang`s only dedicated liveaboard dive boat. She is a luxurious owner-operated vessel which accommodates 12 guests and 7 crew in air-conditioned comfort. Blue Sea Charters endeavors to make this the dive holiday you dreamt of: beautiful underwater scenery, spectacular marine life, top class service, deluxe comfort and delicious food. We will satisfy the senses and create long-lasting memories.
The boat is 100 ft long and 25 ft wide and has three levels. With 30 ton of water, plus a 1 1/2 ton water maker and 50 ton of fuel the cruising range is extensive. She is steel, and is of solid construction, making for smooth passages whatever the seas.
The boat is fully air-conditioned. She has 6 twin berth cabins, four with private ensuite and two sharing an ensuite. Two rooms have a double bed below with a single above to suit couples or single people. Two cabins have single berths on the same level separated by a bedside table. These rooms all have two large windows. The ensuites have house-style toilets as opposed to complicated marinized ones and the shower is also house-size with plenty of room to move. The two remaining cabins have roomy twin beds in an upper and lower configuration and share a spacious bathroom with toilet, shower, sink and mirror. All beds have reading lamps.
The saloon on the top deck has ample room for dinning and also has a relaxing lounge area where guests can read books from our extensive reference library, watch movies or view their own digital footage on the TV. There is also a large out door area for eating and relaxing.
The back deck is a large wide area with tanks held in well spaced dive seats thus allowing easy gearing up. Each diver has their own dive tub to store their gear safely out of the weather and there is also extra large tubs for rinsing camera gear.
*The Crew of Moonlighting II
James and Tony Collins were both born and raised in PNG. Both are captains and dive masters who have extensive experience in the diving industry and an intimate knowledge of the country. Their experience enables then to find the best diving even in areas that are yet to be explored.
With their specially chosen crew which consists of dive masters, deck crew, cook and cleaning staff, our custom fitted out vessel is designed to make diving not only enjoyable but easy and relaxing .
Brothers, Tony and James are descended from the first Europeans to walk into the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. This long-standing association with the country makes guests feel they are in experienced hands. Both brothers can regale you with stories of PNG old and new, stories of the high seas and are always ready with an appropriate joke or 10!
Location description: Remote pristine reefs offer underwater vistas ranging from volcanic sea mounts, drift dive passages and dramatic drop-offs draped with vibrantly coloured corals and sponges. Reefs rising up from the deep blue to just below the surface host a wealth of exotic marine life.
Divers will be enthralled by large schools of pelagics: Barracuda, Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna and Mackerel. Adding to the profusion of life are Eagle Rays, Turtles and Reef Sharks. Closer inspection of the reef reveals an amazing array of smaller inhabitants such as colourful nudibranchs and curious clown fish. In all, a wonderland of diverse reef ecosystems. Papua New Guinea saw some of the most bitter fighting during World War 2. As a result, many WW2 wrecks are to be found both above and below the water. Aircraft and shipwrecks such as an American B-25 Mitchell Bomber, a Cobra, an American freighter and several Japanese merchant ships provide wreck diving that is unsurpassed in the world. In addition to the sheer awe-inspiring presence of these historical icons, the rich tropical waters have encouraged a profusion of marine life to form in and around the wrecks.
Charters usually sail from Madang to the outer lying islands and reefs, however, charters can always be tailored to your specific wishes. Dependent upon trip length, weather and currents, the following sites are amongst those which can be visited.
Brief description of dive locations or wrecks:
*Saidor - WW2 plane wreck, beautiful drop-offs dripping with soft corals, giant clams, plenty of shark action.
*Long Island - A large volcanic island; Crown Island - Small volcanic island. Both have spectacular sea mounts packed with life, big pelagics, turtles. These reefs are virtually untouched and are rarely dived.
*Hankow Reef - A rarely visited, submerged volcanic reef with good pelagic action. Fantastic diving for the more adventurous.
*Bagabag - sheer-sided pinnacles dropping down to 300m, festooned with an amazing variety of soft and hard corals; lots of fish, sharks, turtles, lots of little creatures too, e.g. colourful nudibranchs.
*Karkar drift diving specialty! Barrier reefs with strong currents bring in
large numbers of pelagics such as giant dogtooth tuna, Spanish mackerel and sharks. Enjoy swimming in the large groups of spotted eagle rays.
*Umboi Island and Tolokiwa Island - largely unexplored reefs with big pelagic action and colourful drop-offs. Pristine reefs with exceptional action!
*Hansa Bay - sight of many WW2 wrecks. Only visited when visibility is good enough, usually May through to November. When the water is good, the diving is superb.
*Boston - American mine sweeper sunk during mine clearing operations just after WW2. Spectacular wreck dive.
*B25 Mitchell Bomber - complete with machine guns and ammunition.
*Henry Leith - Small freighter festooned with delicately coloured soft corals and fans hosting a large lionfish population. This is an underwater photographer`s paradise!
