Location description:
The Diving Centre is located in the town of Sozopol. The training dives will be held around the town and local coastal locations. The ancient town of Apollonia, later called Sozopol – historical existed 6000 years ago. The Black Sea level at the time was 8 – 10 meters lower which is the reason why this region of the coast is rich in interesting underwater ruins.
In the 2nd half of the 20th century underwater archaeologists found on the seabed around the coastal area of Sozopol hundreds of stone anchors belonging to the Adriatic nations. (Finikians, Mikanians, Critians from the 13-8 B.C.)
During the course of it’s existence from ancient times to present, the town has been conquered times by Thracians, Romans, Bisantines. In the year 330 the town of Apolonia was renamed to Sozopol. This name means ``The Saved Town``. In the year 705 the town, as a part of the Zagora region handed over from Emperor Justin 2nd to the Bulgarian Khan Tervel. That was the time when the town became a Bulgarian town. Later the town came under Turkish control. During the Russo – Turkish war in 1829 for a short while the town was freed and then was conquered by the Turks until the liberation in 1878. During all this time the town has been an important commercial trade center. This is proved by the numerous numbers of archaeological finds. Lead anchors of between 200 and 400 kilogram that belonged to 200 – 500 tones ships were found during underwater archaeological expeditions in the base of Sozopol. Among the finds were also a large quantity of ancient coins, pottery dating back to the 4th century B.C. amphora and other items. These kinds of items can be seen in the archaeological museum in Sozopol. The remains of an old monastery and a church belonging to the Bulgarian kingdom are located on the St. Ivan Island situated opposite the town of Sozopol. There are also some interesting churches and chapels. There are very interesting icons inside.
The Bulgarian Marine Committee opened the first summer tourist season in Sozopol in 1926. Tourism later became the main source of income for the local community of Sozopol. Mainly due to the rich past and varied underwater sites Sozopol initiated the first organized diving course in 1959. From 1960 the town of Sozopol became the first Diving center in Bulgaria.
The manager of MONISUB training center completed a diving course in 1960 and the instructor course in 1963 in the town of Sozopol. Since then he has organized numerous underwater training courses and underwater expeditions in this region. Due to this fact and the excellent conditions that the sea in the region provides the beautiful underwater scenery, the rich flora and fauna, and abundance of archaeological remains and sunken vessels the MONISUB training center has been established in the town of Sozopol where it develops its training and recreational bases.
