Company description
Our club was founded in 1975 and currently has 25 members. We are members of the Irish Underwater Council (Comhairle Fo Thuinn) which is affiliated to C.M.A.S (Confederiation Mondiale des Activities Subaquatiques). Between March and October we dive twice weekly ofDalkey Island and the Muglins. Regular Sunday snorkels at Greystones would blow anybody`s cobwebs away! But for the less hearty our winter pool sessions and dive lectures act as a opportunity to train new recruits and also to keep current members up to scratch.
If you have no diving experience then you will need to complete a training course and qualify initially as a Trainee 1* diver. We train new recruits starting each October where we have Try a Dive evenings. The main aim of our try-a-dive nights is to introduce people to SCUBA in the safety and comfort of a pool .
This allows you the opportunity to enjoy the novelty of breathing underwater and the sensation of weightlessness with a view (hopefully) to taking further training which would lead to a qualification such as Club Diver. The training involves attending weekly pool sessions and completing various snorkelling and diving pool tests. In tandem with this we meet on Sundays for a sea snorkel which keeps members active throughout the winter months. Lectures are also run throughout the winter and trainees are required to attend these. Trainees are accompanied by experienced divers at all times over the first dive year. At the end of each first dive year we prepare trainees to take the Club Diver 2* dive test. This is an excellent dive qualification which will licence you to dive throughout the world.
Location description:
*Maiden Rock
The north tip of Maiden Rock sees boulders give in to a sandy bottom with scattered rocks at 7-8 meters. An interesting old boiler and some other parts of the wreck usually holds one or two lobsters. The boiler is overgrown and scattered with rusted holes each an invitation to a bright torch.
The dive location is a safe enough bet when most other locations are undiveable on a rising tide with southerly winds.
It is a good location for finding octopus and squid.
*Seal Bay
Actually not the best place to see seals but a good sheltered spot when conditions are rough elsewhere. Difficult to get more than 12m but the predominantly sandy bottom with some large protruding rock outcrops can produce interesting life such as cuttlefish, pipefish and some flatfish - all depends how closely you look.
*The Muglins
The Muglins is the optimum dive site in the area. An offshore rock prone to strong currents, the east side is favoured for the best diving. This includes cliff drop and large boulders down to 18m+, 25-30 meters is possible though leaving the shelter of the island to head east you may end up in Dun Laoighre on surfacing.
*Coliemore Park Dive
For a shore dive in the vicinity of Dublin this one can be exciting even if you find yourself looking in lobster pots. Don`t let the shallow restrictions of the dive put you off - there is excellent life here. Head west for and chose to run parallel with the coast line at about 7m against the direction of the current. Good boulder outcrops where small numbers of congers and lobsters can be found.
*Dalkey Island South
A gentle slope of boulders to 15m. Gives way going south to sandy bootom with some boulders. You could get 20/25m at a push. Can be an interesting dive in good visibility. Large numbers of lobsters (up to 15 on a dive). Always a good spot for cuckoo wrasse which are strangely scarcer on the Muglins. Usually a sheltered dive area in the lea of the island and always second to the Muglins in order of dive preferability.
