Company description Born in 1993, UCD Sub-Aqua has grown from small beginnings and we are now a large ever-expanding club with almost 100 members. We have a strong focus on training with a large influx of new trainees every September. There is a huge input from club members in all aspects of running the club and we can now instruct on all Irish Underwater Council training courses.
Diving is a non-competitive sport that involves snorkelling and diving all over ireland. Scuba diving offers a unique and personal glimpse of life beneath the sea. Training comprises a series of lectures on dive theory with practical pool sessions every Tue night from September to Feb. There are Dublin bay snorkels throughout the winter as well as weekends away all year round. Weekly (midweek and weekend) Dublin bay wreck and scenic diving trips are organised from March to September. We dive on all Irish coasts, especially the western seaboard where there is great diving for all levels. The club also offers training in all aspects of diving and once you have completed your 1* qualification, the world is your oyster and you can expand your dive experience by training for your 2**, 3***, Monituer/Instructor, VHF radio licence, diver medic, boat handling certificate or rescue diver. We welcome beginners and experienced divers as it runs crossover courses for all recognised diving organisations.
The club has many weekends away during the year, along with plenty of social events. From September to Easter, the main focus of the club is to train new members. There are pool sessions, lectures and of course, those wonderful morning snorkels in Sandycove. Once all the trainee divers have passed their exam the dive season kicks in and there is weekly diving in Dublin as well as trips to the West Coast.
Don`t let anyone tell you there is nothing to see when diving in Ireland!
Location description: Our boats (Barramundi and Adastra).
We acquired our new 6.4m Tornado RIB Adastra . We also have Barramundi, a 5.45m Ribcraft RIB which means we can now extend our range of diving.
And some words about our training programm:
Clubdiver 2**:
The principal aim of the program is to get all the required dives out of the way and the candidates ready for testing early in the new 2001 season. To that end the plan is to dive through the winter at whatever suitable locations we can find, that includes the west coast. Since a full club weekend can be a major logistical event trainees and their mentors would be expected to arrange their own diving trips so as to achieve the overall goal. The mentor is to co-ordinate with the trainees in
arranging their diving, helping with their training, encouraging them and to prepare them for the final exam. It is envisaged that most of the dives that the trainees will do, will be with their respective mentors.
Trainee 1*:
New Trainees are welcome to join the club. Training consists of a compulsory lecture series on the theory behind diving, followed by a one hour pool session on a Tuesday night. During the winter there will be snorkelling every Sunday morning in Sandycove, and by Easter trainees will be ready to take their trainee diver exam and start diving in the open sea.
Note: If you have a dive qualification from an awarding body other than CMAS (PADI etc.), to dive with UCD, there are a number of lectures you must attend and open water dives to do to `cross over` to CMAS. When these are completed you will receive a CMAS cert from the Irish Underwater Council (CFT) and you are ready to dive with UCD
