Company description Wicklow Sub-Aqua Club was founded at premises at Wicklow harbour in 1980 by a small group of enthusiasts who could see the wonderful potential for the sport in the area. The club was formed to promote the sports of Scuba and snorkel diving and give the people of the area a chance to enjoy the excitement of underwater exploration. Today it has over 40 members.
Wicklow Sub-Aqua Club is affiliated to Comhairle Fo-Thuinn (Irish Underwater Council). CFT is the governing body for diving in Ireland, which provides certification for diving qualifications. CFT is also affiliated to CMAS (Confederation Mondiale des Activites Subaquatiques); this is the World Underwater Federation.
It is through CMAS that all certification issued by Wicklow Sub-Aqua Club has international recognition. On completion of the training programme, the diver is issued with a log book. This is essentially the diver`s passport that can be presented as proof of competency at dive centres anywhere in the world.
Over the years the club has been involved in many projects, one of which was the raising of the three anchors from the Greek ship `Tryfillia`, which sank off Wicklow on November 12 1912.
The project began in 1983 and culminated two years later with the anchors being mounted on a stone plinth overlooking Wicklow Harbour. This monument is dedicated to all those from Wicklow who lost their lives at sea. (See picture above)
Wicklow Sub-Aqua Club is administered by the club committee elected at the AGM held at the end of each diving season.
Currently we have 2 Grand Raid Zodiac MkIII Inflatable boats which are powered by Yahama 40hp engines. The Zodiac Mark III is 5 metres long and 2 metres wide and is capable of 25 knots when carrying 2 people. Our boats have been fitted with prop-guards and are capable of 16-18 knots when carrying 5 fully kitted Divers. They have a range of 3 hours at full speed giving a range of approximately 54 nautical miles.
Wicklow Sub Aqua Club have 2 compressors in use in the club. A petrol powered mobile compressor which is used throughout the year and carried to all diving sites that do not have local air filling facilities. This compressor is in the club for the past 12 years. It is capable of 200 litres per minute output at 232 bar and requires manually draining. Also the Club owns and operates 2 Navco VHF Handheld Radios similar to the one pictured at right.
Location description: Some of dive sites that we visit:
*The Mweelaun`s
The Mweelaun`s comprise two main rocks rising 20m from the sea and lying about 4.5km SW of the Harbour. It is usual to start the dive on the South side of the gap unless there is too much swell from the Atlantic which is possible even on the best days. It is difficult to get much more than 28-30m but, once below the kelp, the bottom is strewn with boulders and the sea is filled with life.
* Deace`s Rock
Deace`s Rock never quite covers, though there is invariably a swell there. It is located off the North tip of the island no more than 0.5km from the old disused lighthouse. There is a tidal set of about 2 knots in this area and consequently it is advisable to dive there either at high water or low water. Deace`s Rock has huge underwater cliffs, gullies and ledges around it with depths up to 35m to the West.
*The Bills
The bills are probably one of the most renowned diving locations in Ireland. they are located about 14km WNW off Clare Island and rise 40m above the sea. If you dive close to the North face of the Eastern most rock you will have 45-50m before you hit the bottom. the way down is fantastic, with ledges and an unbelievable variety of colours from the sea anemone which cover the rock face. The sea is alive with Mackerel, Pollack, Wrasse etc. The Bills were used as a firing range before 1918 and the brass rings from the shells are still to be found.
*Kinatevdilla Head
Kinatevdilla Head is on the SW corner of Clare Island and it is possible to swim between it and the mainland. The passage is shallow and the seabed to the North of the main island and to the North of the Head is only of fair interest, especially if you have already been spoiled by the Bills and by Deace`s Rock.
*The Lighthouse
The North West shore of the island under the old lighthouse and south of it, is an interesting, if shallow dive. The area is sheltered from South West winds.
*Two Fathom Rock (6)
Two Fathom Rock, which lies a little more than 800m North of Lecknacurra Head, is another popular dive. Many have finned South from Two Fathom Rock towards the island in search of a German WWII Aircraft, which has never been found. Every time the story is told the aircraft is ``reliably`` positioned in a different location.
*Shore Dive
It is possible to dive from the shore, but without transport, all but the very enthusiastic are limited to the shore which lies between the Bayview hotel and the harbour. The water there is clear and the bottom mainly sandy with depths which are seldom in excess of 10m. Nevertheless a night dive from this beach can be most rewarding.
