Company description
Welcome to M.A.D. Divers Mallorca - diving from Palmanova, Magalluf and Santa Ponsa!
M.A.D. Divers are a British owned and British staffed diving centre offering scuba diving trips and PADI scuba diving courses around Palmanova, Magalluf and Santa Ponsa in the south west corner of Mallorca / Majorca. Here the very best diving in Mallorca / Majorca can be found, including diving at the nature reserves of El Toro and Malgrats.
We provide a high quality service, diving only the best dive sites in Mallorca / Majorca, using the best equiped diving boats and all our rental equipment is replaced regularly. Unlike many others, we have separate changing and hot shower facilities for males and females within our diving centre. We also provide free transportation between the diving centre and your hotel / apartment (from Portals Nous, Palmanova, Magalluf, Cala Vinas, Son Ferrer, El Toro, Santa Ponsa and Peguera). You can also come diving on nitrox if you`re a nitrox certified diver - at no extra cost compared to diving on air. All this is provided at competetive prices and only with British diving instructors.
We are a small team, so the treatment you get is going to be personal.
M.A.D. Divers (Mallorca Adventure Diving SL, to give us our Sunday name) is British owned and run. Jim did most of his training and initial work in the UK, diving in the North Sea and Scapa Flow. He has also worked in the Caribbean, on Aruba. Daniel spent much of his early career diving in the Irish sea (he glows in the dark now!!!).
Both are qualified PADI Instructors and also EFR instructors.
Back again in 2006, for his third season with us, is Steve - another ex-pat PADI instructor with extensive experience in Mallorca, the UK, mainland Spain and Cyprus.
Our 3 instructors have nearly 5000 dives between them so to say you`re safety is in good hands is an understatement.
M.A.D. divers offer PADI scuba diving courses run by professional British diving instructors, covering the entire range of diving experiences, from those that have never tried diving before all the way up to those who want to start on the professional ladder. We also limit our class sizes to 2 students per instructor, half the class size many other dive centres work with, improving your safety and enjoyment.
Our PADI diving courses are all run by British PADI diving instructors.
Here is a full list of the PADI scuba diving courses you can choose from on your holiday in Mallorca.
*Discover Scuba Diving - a few hours just to see whether you like it or not.
*PADI Scuba Diver - an introductory certification course for those with not much time available. Part time spread over 2 days.
*PADI Open Water Diver - this is the main entry level course.
If you`d like to free up some extra time while you`re on holiday you can now complete most of your reading and study exercises at home in the UK - by taking advantage of the M.A.D.
*PADI Adventure Diver - This is a shortened version of the PADI Advanced Open Water. Ideal if time is short as it`s only 3 dives.
*PADI Advanced Open Water - AOW is the next significant step from PADI Open Water diver and involves 5 dives (ie. the adventure diver course plus 2 more dives).
*PADI Diver Speciality Programs
- allowing you to learn more in depth about the type of diving that interests you.
*Emergemcy First Response - the new first aid course, including 1st aid, 2nd aid and sometimes lemonade.
*PADI Rescue Diver - an excellent course on how to prevent and respond to problem situations. If you`re interested in this course you may also be interested in our ``Fast Track` courses.
*PADI Master Scuba Diver - the highest non-professional ranking.
*PADI Divemaster - the first step on the professional ladder. If you`re interested in this course you may also be interested in our ``Fast Track` courses.
*PADI AI, OWSI and Staff Instructor - the timing and availability of these courses is strictly limited, so book early!
Location description:
The scuba diving in Majorca is varied and interesting, with scuba diving in Majorca being available almost all year round. The main season for scuba diving, not surprisingly, matches that of the main tourism season with most diving centers on Majorca closed over the winter period.
The summer months are the main scuba diving season - with the warmer waters and the general influx of tourists bringing scuba divers in their tens of thousands to Majorca every year. Winter scuba diving generally involves dive clubs visiting, especially now that there are so many discount airlines operating into Palma de Mallorca airport. Depending upon when they visit, what these divers will see in the ocean surrounding Majorca varies from season to season and from dive site to dive site. Specifics of what to expect from the different dive sites are given below, but as a general introduction to scuba diving in Majorca it`s fair to say that many divers who have never been scuba diving here before are surprised at the wealth and variety of marine life that exists.
In the spring you are almost certain to see an octopus or ten whilst you`re out diving. These beautiful and interesting creatures come up from the depths around Majorca in great numbers and find nooks and crannies to hide themselves in from predators.
Barracuda are another inhabitant of the seas around Majorca that you are likely to see whilst you`re diving. These fantastic predatory beasts are found frequently during the entire diving season. If you`re lucky and you move very slowly, your strange presence in their environment may get them interested enough to start circling around you in groups of several hundred until you are surrounded by these slow moving and menacing looking ancient hunters of the sea. Contrary to some peoples beliefs these barracuda are not dangerous to humans, but it`s still a quite spectacular experience!
Many of the diving sites, especially those that extend below 20m, are home to moray eels and congers. These animals of the deep are some of the most menacing looking creatures you`ll find in the seas of Majorca. There is a wreck dive in the List of M.A.D. Dive sites, ``the eel dive``, which will give the experienced diver the opportunity to meet dozens of these beauties face to face!
The exceptions to almost everything said above are the wreck dives in Palma bay. Here, because of the silty bottom and the constant movement of large commercial shipping the visibility is typically about 4m, can reach 15m on a good day, but can also drop to near zero after rough seas. Pollution over the years has reduced the marine life on these wrecks and the surrounding seabed, but the wrecks themselves are well worthy of diving for those experienced in these conditions and for whome sea life isn`t so important.
