Company description
Like so many great organisations, the BSAC started small. A few enthusiasts got together and decided that divers needed a club... and the rest is history. In fact, it is the history of diving in the UK.
The British Sub Aqua Club is by any measure a quite extraordinary organisation. Formed and run throughout its existence by enthusiastic and dedicated members, the club has successfully competed with commercially orientated bodies and has thrived in the process. From its beginnings the club has received world-wide recognition as a leader, standard-setter and innovator in the field of sport diving.
The BSAC was born as a club for divers, and remains so today - in fact, it`s the biggest diving club in the world.
From its earliest days it started to grow, as groups of divers around the UK and overseas came together to form diving clubs. These clubs were formed within the BSAC and were known as Branches.
This structure allowed a diver to become a member of the BSAC by joining a Branch, and it needed only 12 members to start a Branch. The number of Branches grew steadily over the years and remains in excess of one thousand.
The local nature of Branches gave divers accessible meeting points that provided all they needed to get into diving. Their local Branch could offer diving instruction toward internationally-recognised BSAC qualifications, together with a path to gaining further experience through branch-organised diving trips. Most members will also rate the social character of a BSAC Branch as a major advantage over other ways of taking up diving since it provided a means of making steady progress in good company.
BSAC Branches are the foundation on which it has built its reputation. By making diving accessible and affordable the Club has helped many thousands of people each year to take up diving, many of them making it a continuing passion.
Many BSAC Branches are well equipped, with a stock of equipment for training and even their own powerful boats, giving them access to interesting and adventurous diving. They are also able to offer advanced training to the higher diving grades and advanced diving skills via Skill Development Courses organised either locally or regionally.
Branch diving trips may be to an inland site for the day, coastal sites for a weekend, and increasingly to overseas venues for diving holidays. All of these offer excellent opportunities for gaining wider experience and confidence and adapting skills to the type of diving available.
As the number of qualified BSAC Club Instructors grew a need was seen for a second grade of instructor to teach open water diving skills and the Advanced Instructor Course and BSAC Advanced Instructor Examination were set up to meet this.
As a logical develoment of this process the NUIA agreed to hand over the responsibility for its qualification to the BSAC and the BSAC National Instructor qualification was established.
This pattern of Instructor Training events operated for a number of years, evolving eventually into the current structure explained fully at Instructor Training Scheme.
Like any club, a BSAC Branch depends on its membership for its management and this allows members to participate in many different ways. Those with an aptitude for teaching will find the opportunities to gain instructional experience and qualifications which can eventually involve them in a wider regional or national role.
The Council Members and Officers of the BSAC are elected from Branch members who have gained experience at local and regional level. This is what makes the BSAC the club for divers... not for profit.
Today the BSAC has some 45,000 members which makes it the largest single diving Club in the world.

When you join a BSAC course you will see that diving skills are taught progressively so that each new experience is built upon step by step. Following basic training in the safety of a swimming pool or protected area, students soon complete their first open water dives to achieve Ocean Diver certification. This progression continues to Sports Diver and beyond, where open water skills and techniques are further developed and experience gained.
Ocean Diver
This course provides you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to prepare for open water diving. Learning to dive is all about learning to use your equipment properly and safely. The Ocean Diver training course concentrates on preparing you for this in the safety of a swimming pool or sheltered water and then introducing you to open water in a controlled and safe manner. This also gives you the opportunity to practice safety skills in the company of a qualified instructor or experienced diver.
Sports Diver
In Sports Diver training, the emphasis is on building a sound foundation of open water diving skills and experience through a series of structured practical lessons. Once you have gained this open water experience with a qualified instructor, you are ready to take part in dives with other Sports Divers or those of higher grades.
Dive Leader
Dive Leader training concentrates on the responsibilities and safety aspects of leading other divers on an open water dive. Practical lessons in rescue management and rescue skills will give you the confidence and ability to deal with those unforeseen emergencies. Leading a dive will develop your enjoyment, confidence and experience as a diver.
Advanced Diver
The Advanced Diver course further develops your knowledge and skills. You will gain experience in planning and organising dives at different sites and under different circumstances. Additional experience will be gained in using small boats, chartwork. navigation and many other related skills. The BSAC consider this grade a fully trained diver.
First Class Diver
The BSAC`s highest diving grade which requires a higher than average level of theoretical knowledge, organisational and personal diving skills. The First Class Diver award is a culmination of a number of years` of diving experience. BSAC 1st Class Divers are assessed through nationally conducted examinations.
Most BSAC Branches plan a programme of dives for the coming season, usually for a day or a weekend, although sometimes this includes trips abroad. Branch members can benefit from their Branch`s experience and enjoy the company of other Branch members. Branch dives provide an excellent opportunity to those who are seeking to broaden their diving experience and to extend their experience of dive planning and organisation.
