Company description Our well-established and professionally run centre caters for all levels of diving including a strong emphasis on Mixed Gas and Rebreather diving. Within 10 minutes of leaving the centre you are diving on classic wrecks and reefs and a little further afield for the more adventurous we have un-dived and challenging deep wrecks throughout the Western Approaches.
Who are Deep Blue?
Well you could be forgiven for getting a little confused, there does seem to be an awful lot of Companies in the UK trading as Deep Blue but here’s my take on it.
In 1996 I completed my PADI OWSI and IANTD Advanced Nitrox Instructor with a guy called Martin Smith. Martin ran a company called Deep Blue Diving Ltd and he specialised in Tech Training.
In 1997 I asked Martin if I could use his company name as I wanted to do the same as what he had done. As he wasn’t training divers at the time he agreed, and I used the name with his consent.
Martin was an inspiration and firmly put me on the track of Professional Tech Training, he showed me the first incarnation of George Irvines first video in 1997, nearly 9 years ago!
It would seem at exactly the same time Deep Blue Dive Centre in Tynemouth started up, and also another diver named Colin was running a Deep Blue Diving in Stoke as a PADI training facility based at a swimming pool in Stoke.
Martin was the original Deep Blue and I have argued this point with both the Deep Blue Dive Centre and Deep Blue Diving in Stoke.
Colin from Deep Blue Diving in Stoke has now ceased trading so I guess I’m now the only Deep Blue Diving in the country, unless someone else has started up that I don’t know about?
To avoid the above happening I trade marked the name Deep Blue in 1999 and have had to take legal action to stop other companies using it, what’s the big deal with the words
Location description: We are based in Plymouth, South Devon, where our unrivalled waterfront location is on the doorstep of some of the best diving in the UK.
Reef Diving In The Area:
We have fantastic reef dives, mainly offshore, but within easy reach of Plymouth. These dives range from 14m to 60m in depth and are therefore suitable for all levels of diving but most are tidal, so beware.
Eddystone reef
Hand Deeps
Hat Rock
East and West Rutts
Hilsea Point
Mewstone Ledges
Tinker Shoal
Penlee Point
Technical Dive Sites:
Here are a selection of our favourite sites, but please bear in mind that there are loads of unfound and undived wrecks.
Trimix Diving from Plymouth and into the Western Approaches.
Plymouth could not be better suited for the adventurous diver looking for new challenges and exciting wrecks.
We could dedicate an entire website to the wrecks from Plymouth which as it happens, is going to be our long term project that will be featured from this section of the website.
We also use Salcombe and Falmouth as a base as Endeavour can be self sufficient for Trimix divers with her onboard compressor, Helium, Oxygen and booster pump.
Here are a few of our more popular deep wrecks with a brief description and distance from Shore.
I have personally dived all these wrecks plus many more not written about here. If you have a specific trip in mind or are looking to dive new wrecks just drop me a line please.
Medina 48-65m:
One of the most popular dives East of Salcombe. The Medina is a large P+0 Liner lying upright with a slight list making her a great dive will still lots to find and see
The Medina lies 9 miles from Salcombe and 34 miles from Plymouth
M1 Submarine 75m:
A very atmospheric and unforgettable dive. The M1 lies upright with a slight list to her port side. Dropping down on to her there is no mistaking the outline of this huge submarine. A 25 minute dive will get you around her from Bow to Stern taking in some amazing sights.
The M1 lies 26 miles from Plymouth
Flying Enterprise 75-85m:
Much has been written and said about this wreck. I was fortunate along with Leigh Bishop to be the first diver on this wreck and it blew our minds the day we dived it. You can read more about this wreck on Leighs website at www.deepimage.co.uk. She lies on her port side but being a modern ship sunk in the 50’s has kept her largely intact and therefore easy to navigate around
The Enterprise lies 48 miles from Plymouth and is a bloody long day out, even if you use Falmouth as a base.
The Inner Patch Wrecks, all lie in max depth 75m
We have a great collection of smaller wrecks that lie in depths from 62m to 75m max. These include the following but we’re identifying more as the season progress’s:
Claverly 65m
Brigitte 68m
Stonehaven 65m
Visborg 72m
Australbush 64m
Charlwood (glass wreck) 65m
Eastpoint 68m
Barshaw 68m
