Location description: Our mainland position on the Sound of Mull offers a unique get away from it all location. A diving holiday in Lochaline offers easy access to sheltered and clear waters boasting some of the UKs best known wreck dives in addition to an abundance of drift, shallow, scenic, and shore dive sites.
Lochaline is a small village overlooking the Sound of Mull. Although you will not find supermarkets and nightclubs here, the village can supply most of your needs.
The local shop sells unleaded petrol/diesel and a wide range of food and goods. Lochaline has two licensed premises, a hotel serving bar meals, and an excellent restaurant The White House described as ``outstandingly good`` by the Good Food Guide. The renowned `Jean`s Snack Bar`, newly upgraded to a permanent fixture, remains a favourite haunt for hungry divers and fishermen.
This is a get away from it all location, set in stunning scenery overlooking the Sound of Mull. Hillwalkers are within easy distance of the mountains of Glencoe and Nevis Range including Ben Nevis, in addition to some challenging hill walks on Mull. There are some lovely coastal or woodland walks close to the Dive Centre. Sea angling, river and loch fishing can be arranged locally and the gardens of Ardtornish Estate are also of considerable interest. Day trips to Ardnamurchan peninsula, Fort William and the island of Mull are also easy from Lochaline. The Sound of Mull is also famous in the sea angling world and has become a renowned area for deep sea skate fishing, thanks in part to the excellent skate tagging and return programme operated by Glasgow Museums.
The Sound of Mull is one of the UK`s leading wreck diving locations. Dive tourism is vital to the economy of the Oban and Mull area bringing in millions of pounds of revenue annually. The main attraction which draws divers from all round the UK are the areas shipwrecks, set amidst stunning scenery and sheltered, clear, (but cold!), diving conditions. However, the shipwrecks are deteriorating. This is a result of environmental factors as well as manmade pressures arising from the dive tourism industry, and possibly, other commercial pressures such as scallop dredging, fish farming, and angling.
At least two of the wrecks in the Sound of Mull are of national historic importance. The Swan and the Dartmouth date to the 17th Century, and are designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act, 1973. Other sites are of regional importance. The rest are of local importance.
