Company description
It all started in 1978, when David Jones, the founder of the company, first put on a cylinder, twin hose and horse collar adjustable buoyancy life jacket. Many years and a great deal of experience later, the end result is Triton Scuba.
Triton Scuba was established to provide a centre of diving excellence and expertise. We have grown exponentially since the company was conceived in 1998, which is testimony to having achieved that aim. Our experienced and professional Instructors and Dive Centre Staff are passionate about the sport, and about providing a first class service. We pride ourselves on offering quality, sound and honest advice and value for money. This philosophy has led to us becoming recognized as one of the best Diving Centres in the South of England.
With a knowledge based on many years of experience in diving, both commercially and recreationally, we understand what you are looking for, whether you are taking your first tentative steps in learning to dive, or you are a seasoned professional delving into the depths of serious technical diving. We are here to support your needs, answer your questions and offer impartial advice, whether it is about training, equipment, servicing, dive sites or holidays. Triton Scuba is more than just a Dive Centre, it is a community. Students and customers come back time and time again for training, equipment advice and purchases, holidays, or just a chat. Our Dive Club offers more benefits than any other club in the area and welcomes all divers no matter who you were trained with.
Ideally situated in the centre of Southsea, our dive centre is a hub of activity throughout the year. One of the busiest and fastest growing centres in the South, we are also the only PADI Vocational Centre and Project Aware Official Partner in the area. The centre is a bit like the ``Tardis`` (as in Dr Who), because while the Dive Centre looks small on the outside, once inside, it opens up into a multi-level centre with a full retail shop, classrooms, storage areas and other facilities. There is always a friendly welcome whenever you come in and many of our friends and customers regularly pop by for a chat and a cup of coffee, so don`t be worried that it looks too busy - they are just being sociable. The dive centre is a bit more like a community than a shop and we like all of our customers and students to feel a part of the family.
There is loads to look at in the dive centre so if you have never had the guided just ask - one of our stafff will be delighted to show you around. In the basement we have the majority of our equipment sales. You will find wetsuits, drysuits, BCDs, gloves, boots and hoods all from leading manufacturers, as well as a good range of diver clothing from IQ, Narked, Sea Dog, Fourth Element and In-the-Water. We have a wide selection of equipment and a complete range of sizes, not just one or two. We have dealerships with most of the major manufacturers so even if you can`t find it, the chances are we can get it for you.
On the ground floor we have the main shop where you will find most of the accessories and gadgets you need, plus a huge selection of regulators, gauges, computers and torches, again from leading manufacturers. The ground floor is also where our workshop is located. Servicing is undertaken on-site, rather than being passed to a third party and a qualified technician is always available for advice or equipment ``tweaking``. Towards the back of the ground floor is our dry kit room, wet room and compressor area. We have huge amount of top quality Scubapro gear for students on courses and for hire by qualified divers. With more than 40 wetsuits, 20 drysuits, 20 regulators and BCDs, and 40 cylinders, we rarely run out but it helps us if you let us know in advance if you are coming in to pick up some gear.
Our compressor and bank system provides 300 Bar air, nitrox up to 100% and trimix fills.
Location description:
The coast around West Sussex and the Isle of Wight has some great diving and Triton Scuba is ideally situated if you want to explore it. A naval base throughout history, the waters around Portsmouth and the Solent are abundant with a large number of wrecks from both World Wars and before. Everything from wooden sailing ships to submarines and ocean liners. The depths range from about 17 metres to 45 metres, but the majortity of the major wrecks can be found in about 30 - 35 metres.
We have a regular programme of boat dives off the coast and you are more than welcome to join us. As well as weekend diving we are also able to offer evening dives and full boat charter during the week on board ``Buccaneer`` a 33 foot Lochin. So if you are a club or dive centre, you can either join one of our programmed dives or you may want to plan your own dive trip. Just give us a call and we will try to accommodate your requirements.
If you are going to dive the area it is well worth making a weekend of it and Triton Scuba can support your trip by offering clean and good value accommodation, equipment hire, spares, air, nitrox and trimix fills. We are the closest dive centre to Eastney Jettty at the entrance to Langstone Harbour and no more than 5 minutes away by car. If you need fills or assistance outside of normal working hours let us know and we can sort it out.
Available the most exciting wrecks.
The Solent has been a naval base and natural harbour through time. It is not surprising therefore that the area is a wreck divers paradise. The area first arrived on the ``World stage`` in the 1970s when the Mary Rose was discovered and successfully raised. Historical wrecks, many of which are protected due to their historical importance, are in abundance. In addition there are large numbers of other wreck sites which are easily accessible to divers. They range from shallow inshore wrecks, such as the Mulberry Harbours, to exciting U-boats and Ocean Liners in deeper waters. For the diver interested in military history, there is the opportunity to dive on the ships and U-boats that were involved in conflict between each other. All the wrecks in the area are covered in life including big shoals of pouting and whiting, bass, huge pollock, conger and lobster. So why not come and see for yourself.
Another one, the Polo is lying slightly onto her port side in 28m of water 12 miles from Portsmouth. She was a cargo and passenger vessel and went down in 1918 when she was hit by a torpedo from UB57. At the time her cargo was mainly coal, as you can tell by the vast amount lying around the site. She went down within 10 minutes of being hit but most of the crew were saved. Standing 8m proud of a shingle seabed, visibilty is very often excellent. There are large shoals of bib and pollack around her and her vast boilers make a imposing site. Well worth the trip.
