Company description
Welcome to the Leeds FreeDivers Club. The club was founded in 1967 and is a member of the UK Sub Aqua Association (SAA) which is one of the governing bodies of SCUBA diving. The SAA is internationally recognised for the training standards offered and is your passport to the adventure and excitement of visiting the underwater world. A number of training courses are available which will enable you to plan your own dives, use the club`s fully equipped dive boats and take part in diving holidays anywhere in the oceans of the world. The following details available provide an overview of the club`s organisation and programme of SCUBA training and events..
In 1967. A group of divers decided to set up a independent diving club. The so-called group consisted with the likes of Jack Wooley, Peter Anderson, Eric Briton, John Adams, David Mellors, Alan and Barbara Smith. This group of divers and others formed the initial formation of the Leeds Free Divers.
In 1985 The club became affiliated with the newly established Sub-Aqua Association (SAA) providing the club members with international recognition of their diving qualifications. At the time of celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 1997- the club had 70 registered members, incorporating not only diving members, but also OCTOPUSH players, associated and honorary members all of whom contribute to the clubs varied social and fund-raising activities.
In 1997. The club successfully applied for a grant from the Foundation for Sports and Art Council. After an eighteen months wait the grant came through, and the club was in a position to be able to obtain a 5.5 meter Tornado RIB boat with trailer. That came fully equipped with such equipment as G.P.S guidance system, echo sounder and a big engine to boot. Also after additional fund raising and the selling of various equipment including the trusty old Humber club boat, the club was also able to buy a 5.1 meter Tornado all singing all dancing RIB boat as well. Allowing the club to organize a much more varied selection of dive trips for its members. 1997 also saw the club receive a £300 grant from the local council, which was used to purchase several sets of snorkeling equipment used to train novice divers.
Each year the club trains on average 10 - 15 new divers to the safety standards recognized by the SAA. Dive trips are organized by the club members to dive sites all over the United Kingdom and to more distant shores e.g. France, Red Sea.
The Dive club meets on a Monday and Friday night at the Morley swimming baths. this takes place between 8:00 and 10:00 and then the social meeting at a near by pub to sink a few jars.
OCTOPUSH Is a fun-fast underwater game that will test your fitness to the limits. The idea is like underwater hockey, But your hockey stick is a single handed 12 inch long piece of wood, using snorkel and fins.
The idea is that one team tries to get the underwater puck to one side of the pool while the other team has other intentions. Monday night is when all the fun takes place just around 9:00 come down for a look and see if it`s the game for you.
Location description:
Every year without fail the Leeds Freedivers take a trip to the dales ,everyone involved puts on there dry suits (only real men would wear wet suits,) and they throw themselves down the vigorous rapids of white water of the river Wharf.
