ELEMENTARY DIVER
Before training commences, the trainee must have completed the fitness assessment to the satisfaction of the club DO, signed a declaration of fitness form and completed a medical questionnaire. The relevant lectures S1 to S6 must also have been attended. It is also essential that before starting the open water section of the elementary diver, a medical examination by an MD is completed.
OPEN WATER DIVER
Trainee must have achieved elementary diver certificate. Must complete 4 qualifying dives in a safe open water dive site. Dives must be under the supervision of a dive leader or above. All dives can be carried out at the same open water site. Maximum depth whilst under training is 20 metres.
An open water diver can only dive under the direct supervision of a dive leader or higher qualified diver/instructor. An open water diver has limited open water diving experience and must progress to club diver training to gain further skills.
CLUB DIVER
Trainee must have achieved open water diver certificate. Must complete ten dives in a variety of conditions. No more than two qualifying dives in any one day and no more than two qualifying dives at any one site. 5 dives must be sea dives. Dives must be under the supervision of a dive leader minimum. Maximum depth whilst under training is 35 metres.
The trainee must pass a written examination covering lectures C1 -C6 to the satisfaction of the club D.O. Written examinations may be set by the club or obtained from SAA head-office.
DIVE LEADER
Trainee must have achieved club diver certificate before training commences. Must complete at least 15 additional dives in a variety of conditions. No more than two qualifying dives in any one day and no more than two qualifying dives at any one site. 8 dives must be sea dives. A dive leader is someone who has had additional experience in both practical and theory and has proven their ability to lead divers underwater.
The trainee must pass a written examination (which must include air calculations) covering lectures L1 - L5 to the satisfaction of the club DO.
DIVE SUPERVISOR
Must have achieved dive leader certificate and hold diver rescue award. Must complete twenty-five additional dives in a variety of conditions. No more than two qualifying dives in any one day and no more than two qualifying dives at any one site. 12 dives must be sea dives.
The certified dive supervisor has an advanced level of practical diving experience and a wide knowledge of diving theory. Has proved his/her own ability to organise and supervise diving expeditions.
The trainee must pass a written examination Incorporating theory at all levels, up to and including dive supervisor.
Regional Instructor
Part One.
Knowledge Review.
Written exam testing diving knowledge, safety awareness and Instructional Techniques.
Part Two. Practical Assessments
Two day assessment examining Lecture technique, content, timing and ability. Includes assessing other candidate’s abilities.

S.A.A. BASIC BOATHANDLING COURSE
To give members with very little or no boat handling experience, theoretical and practical instruction in the safe handling of small powerboats at sea.
The course usually lasts 2 days over a weekend at a suitable venue.
The first day being classroom based covering the various theory subjects.
The second day is all practical, at sea, in tidal waters, practicing the various skills.
Diver First Aid Course
This is a two day course that aims to cover all aspects of Diver First Aid, including practical skill development in Resuscitation, Incident Management, bandaging, fractures, burns and control of bleeding. Also theory lessons covering the respiratory and circulation system, bites/stings and the signs and symptoms of decompression illness.
At the end of the course, the candidate should have the confidence and ability to be able to administer first aid in the situations usually associated with recreational diving. The course will be based on the Heartstart programme, ensuring that resuscitation skills are as up-to-date as possible.
