Company description
The Gay & Lesbian Underwater Group (GLUG) is a non-profit Scuba Diving club for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered divers and their friends.
We have over 100 members, (around 35% women, 65% men), throughout the UK, and our ages range from mid-20s to late 50s.
We organise at least 10 dive trips in the UK and overseas each year.
We don`t discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation! Although the club is aimed at the gay community, we have one or two enlightened straight divers who find our club a refreshing change from the very macho, hetero-male environment in many other clubs.
GLUG`S Mission Statement
GLUG is a scuba diving club comprising mainly lesbians, bisexual men and women, and gay men.
GLUG`s aim is to provide high quality, enjoyable, and safe diving for its members, in a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere.
We aim to organise several UK and Overseas trips per year.
GLUG`s priority is to provide a core of excellent and sustainable activities for the benefit of all its members, and to use this track record to encourage new members to join.
All diving activities shall respect, and take care not to damage, the marine environment.
GLUG is totally committed to non-discrimination on the grounds of age, race, gender, sex, sexual preference, and physical disabilities, however it does recognise that for the purpose of scuba diving, (but not for club membership), certain diving industry/universally accepted restrictions do apply.
GLUG recognises the following organisations / minimum qualifications as proof of ability to dive:
PADI Open Water Diver
BSAC Club Diver
CMAS
SAA Elementary
NAUI Open Water Diver
and other equivalents
GLUG membership is open to individuals with HIV and other infections, and on the basis of currently accepted specialist medical opinion, recognises the very minimal risk of transmission/infection to other divers. GLUG acknowledges that some complications of HIV may make diving unsuitable for that person.
GLUG organises discounts for training/certification and for diving equipment with gay-friendly commercial companies/organisations, which will be available to all members on production of theit GLUG membership card, or other evidence of membership.
If you can`t dive we`ll help you!
1. BSAC, PADI, NAUI, SSI
These are the abbreviations for the various Dive Certification Agencies. The British Sub-Aqua Club and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors are the two best-known, but many people train with other organisations such as the North American Underwater Instructors or Scuba Schools International.
No matter which of these you choose, you`ll be learning the same basic skills. The main difference between BSAC and most of the other agencies is that BSAC is very much a club-oriented system. You pay an annual membership to the BSAC club, and training is normally carried out by instructor-qualified club members, usually at a nominal cost. With PADI and the other agencies, no club membership is necessary, but dive training is a commercial operation, and so you pay considerably more for the course itself. The main advantage that PADI, NAUI, etc. have is that you can learn quickly - in 4-5 days, or a couple of weekends. BSAC`s club system means that training is usually carried out one evening a week over several weeks.
If you can swim 100 metres, and tread water for 5 minutes, then that`s probably sufficient - it`s more important to feel comfortable in the water than it is to be an Olympic-level swimmer, but if you`re in any doubt, talk to an instructor before you start the course.
Location description:
A UK dive trip can cost as little as £10 for a 2-tank dive, if you just want to fill your tanks and jump in the water from a local dive spot. At the other end of the scale, an all-inclusive trip to a luxury dive resort in Indonesia could cost £2500 for a week. Most UK dive trips organised by GLUG cost around £35 per person per day to charter the boat. A week`s diving on a Red Sea liveaboard costs £750-£900 all-inclusive (including flights). For overseas diving you can rent equipment at most resorts for around £15/day, although most people buy their own mask, snorkel, and fins, to ensure a proper fit. For UK diving, you can also often rent equipment, but since most of our trips are arranged direct with boats, rather than dive schools, it`s generally easier to have your own gear, or at least rent it for the weekend from your local dive shop.
BSAC membership is between £60-£150 per year, depending on the club. A PADI Openwater Scuba course costs £300-£350 in the UK.
You can equip yourself with BCD (the scuba backpack), regulator, gauges, and drysuit for as little as £400 if you buy second-hand or end-of-line, or you can spend £10,000 on the latest high-tech gear.
In short, you can spend as much or as little as you can afford.
If you want to learn how to dive, we`ll say you where. It depends on which organisation you want to train with:
BSAC: With Us! GLUG`s BSAC Branch, Dorothy Divers can train you at a London Pool. Email us for more details.
SSI: We recommend Scuba 2000 - they`re a Lesbian owned and run school based in Uckfield, East Sussex. The owners are also GLUG members, so you can be sure of a warm welcome.
PADI: We usually recommend Tower Dive School, but they`re temporarily closed, since one of the partners was injured in a car accident. They`ve recommended Fish in the City or London School of Diving as alternatives. We can also recommend Diving Leisure London, in Battersea.
Outside London: We have members all over the country, and if you`re not within easy reach of one of the above, we may be able to recommend somewhere near you - drop us an email!
