Location description: East Tennants Reef: Depth 18-28m
This site, 3 miles south of Seatown, is, according to many divers, one of the best reef dives in the area. A 2 mile stretch of deep water seperates this reef from West Tennants.
There is a lot of life here including Dogfish, Cuckoo Wrasse, Tompot Blennies and Topknots with large boulders covered with dead mans fingers and seafans. These gradually give way to flattened slabs with lots of nooks and crannies to peer into. Many scallops can be found on sandy ground between reefs.
Please watch your finning here though as this is a marine life study area where `Reef Research` is monitoring the ecology of the pink seafan, abundant in here.
West Tennants Reef: Depth 22-28m, deep gullies and high rock faces
The site is situated 4 miles SW of Lyme Regis. It covers a large area of reef, rocky ground and gullies, one of the highest reef areas in the bay as the charts clearly show.
The fantastic scenery is dramatic in parts with deep gullies, high rock-faces and lots of marine life. Tidal currants are fairly weak here which makes for a lovely gentle drift dive.
Seatown Reef: Depth 12-15m
An excellent novice or second dive. The area is abundant with life, excellent for photography as the shallow water provides plenty of light and long dive times.
Golden Cap Reef: Depth 7-15m
A shallow dive site that is superb for training and novice dives. There is plenty of marine life to see and minimal currants.
West Bexington: Depth 9m, Series of terraces - flat sand
An excellent site for trainees where depth is easily controlled and there is very little weed to spook them! Plaice can often be spotted lying on the sand though, so well worth a visit.
Sawtooth Ledges: Depth 23-29m, Sand and gravel seabed
This reef is only a couple of miles south of West Bay. The Sawtooth ledges are a series of ridges, which slope gently on the south side but drop off sharply on the north side. This produces a display on the depth sounder likea saw blades teeth.
The diver can find most species of UK corals here, hard and soft species, including the rare yellow sunset corals. These can be found in the deeper parts.
Lanes Ground Reef
Depth 24-29m, boulders and coarse sand
This is an area of ground that is raised from the surrounding coarse sand seabed. It is largely small boulders and cobbley stones that are covered in sponges of all colours, wonderful for photographers. The area usually has the best visibility is the bay due to the nature of the seabed which settles quickly after rough weather.
The surrounding area of sand has many sea fans and scallops. Many fish including brill, skate and sole have made this their home, which local fishermen were quick to realise.
