Company description Welcome to Swanage Boat Charters, I’m Martin, the owner of
Location description: There are a great many sites, books and stories telling you all about the wrecks off Dorsets coastline and I am not the man to try and better them, I don`t have any secret numbers of wrecks only I know about. What I am going to try is to tell you a little of each wreck and add any links found on the web or pictures, line drawings etc. If you can add anything please send it in and your name will go with it. Hope you learn something!
The Kyarra
The Carantan
The Firth Fisher
The Kyarra
By now the Kyarra must be the best known wreck on the south coast. On any summer weekend there could be up to 100 divers on the wreck, this could put you off but when you consider the size of this ship, over 400` long, 6000 tons and still standing 30` feet proud of the sea bed, there will still be room for one or two more. There`s still a lot of cargo on this wreck, the list of items found grows longer every week. This ship belongs to Kingston Subaqua but all the cargo belongs to HM Government so all finds must be reported to Receiver of Wrecks. The best time to dive is on a week day with a neap tide. Local dive boats will visit the Kyarra with two divers or more and you may find yourself the only diver there. Tides are a problem with the slack window down to 5-10 minutes on springs but the wreck normally has a shot line attached which shows the tide dying away. You should also use a delayed SMB as it allows diver to surface away from the shot.
The Carantan
A French submarine hunter that sank in a storm on 21 December 1943. Only a small ship measuring 120ft long with a narrow beam of only 20ft weighing 400 tons. She is well splattered but still worth a dive. Laying in 28m of water and again only 500m from the Kyarra with the same slack times. Some ammo still on the wreck. This wreck was purchased by a local man from the French.
The Firth Fisher
This wreck is only 500m from the Kyarra and is upright, almost intact and always full of fish. Any group that takes the time to find this ship will not be disappointed and if you cant find it the Kyarra is right next door. It`s in 34m with a 3-4m hole under the stern and it stands about 3m. Sometimes there is a shot on it but if not I can give you the marks. Use the Kyarra slack time to dive here.
