Company description
Freedom charters can provide you with sea angling trips , Sightseeing trips and Diving in the wonderful waters off the Northeast coast of Scotland. If you are planning a holiday in North Scotland our sea angling and sightseeing trips are a great way of getting a close look at the magical coast and enjoy a days fishing or just observe the scenery. Freedom charters operate in the county of Caithess which is the North most county on the Scottish mainland. The coastline south of Wick on the East of Caithness offers some exceptionally rugged coastal scenery with the locally famed `Brig O`Trams` an amazing sea arch and the Brough, which is a large sea stack known locally as `Scorries Island`. There is also amazing underwater scenery for those intersted in Diving and can offer some amazing sights as seen in the photos in the Diving section. Look around our web pages and if its Sea angling, Sightseeing one of the most amazing coastlines in Scotland or Diving the waters we hope you will come see the amazing sights for yourself!
Our vessel M.V Freedom is a well appointed 33 ft Aquastar Hard Boat fitted out for 10 divers in comfort and conforms to Maritime and Coastguard Agency Code of Practise Cat 2 (60NM) and B.S.A.C. recommendations. There is a roomy forward cabin with comfortable seating for all, stereo radio cassette and galley for making tea or coffee etc. - help yourself. There is also a decent clean toilet. The aft deck has plenty room for kitting up and is fitted with a stern diving platform with twin diving ladders. There are full electronics on board including daylight radar , 2 X colour sounders , 2 X GPS plotters and 2 X VHF radios etc.
The boat is fitted out for 10 divers in comfort, Parties or Individual`s Welcome,
One or Two dive trips, Fully fitted Dual Diving ladder . The boat visits many of the best diving locations in the Caithness`s coastal waters. Colin the skipper has a vast knowlage of where to dive and what you can expect to find. Colin can take divers of different experience levels and has always been ready to help find the best dive spots and what to look for once in the water. One example of a diving party Colin has taken diving is , Alex , John , Gail and Karen from Paisley. They ranged in diving experience but found the clear waters of Caithness very different from where they have been previously on the South West Coast of Scotland. They went diving in an area called the ``Orkneyman`` in Broadhaven just outside of Wick and was kind enough to let us use the photos they took when diving. This is just one of many great diving locations round Caithness which can be enjoyed by all divers.
Location description:
The coastline that surrounds Caithness is a favourite spot for National & International Anglers and is rich with fish like Haddock, Turbot, Cod, Mackerel, Pollack, Bass and Ling as well as a few more elusive species.
The coastline south of Wick offers some exceptionally rugged coastal scenery with the locally famed `Brig O`Trams` an amazing sea arch and the Brough, which is a large sea stack known locally as `Scorries Island` - Scorry being the local word for Seagulls. On the south side of this stack is a large seabird city with the range of seabirds for which the East Caithness cliffs are famed - fulmar, guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, black guillemot, puffin, rock doves, black-backed and herring gulls. You might also see great skua, raven, peregrine falcon and eider duck.
The coastline is indented with numerous `goes`, which are sheer sided inlets of the sea, often ending in sea caves. This makes a fantastic sight on a still evening in the early autumn as the birds swarm around the long cliffsides.
The Caithness cliffs are amongst the best in Europe for viewing nesting seabirds. The sandstone cliffs form ideal ledges for internationally important numbers of fulmar, shag, kittiwake, guillemot, razorbill and black guillemot. Over 100,000 individual guillemot have been recorded at breeding sites along the east Caithness cliffs, approximately 10% of the British total population.
Both common and grey seals are seen from the Caithness coast throughout the year.
Grey seals are mainly found hauled out on rocks along the rocky north and east coastlines, particularly around Sarclet, Staxigoe and the deserted village of Badbea. This is the species of seal most likely to be encountered in Wick and Sarclet harbours. Grey seals breed in the autumn from September to November, mainly along the east coast of Caithness on inaccessible ledges. The best month to see the white pups is in October. They can be seen in almost any rocky inlet along the east coast and can be viewed from the boat without any disturbance.
Party trips on the Caithness Coast
I now do party trips , often as a part of hen and stag weekends. A leisurely trip to Sinclair and Girnigoe and back can be undertaken between midday and 5pm with plenty of time for a picnic. Alternatively a trip can involve a leisurely run to view the wildlife & rock formations. There`s even a chance of seeing dolphins, porpoises, Whales and seals. With guests given the opportunity to take the helm. All excursions are charged at £60/hour. We can carry up to up to 12 passengers, and you may provide your own refreshments.
