Company description Porpoise Diving offer you the best way to experience some of Scotlands finest dive sites. Catering for all levels of ability, our dive sites include underwater pinnacles, drift dives, reefs and wrecks.
Based near Oban, Argyll in the Firth of Lorne, a Special Area of Conservation and a National Scenic Area, we operate a sixty mile licence. Coupled with the speed of our boat ``Porpoise II``, this allows us to visit sites from the Sound Of Jura to The Sound Of Mull, and also West to Dubh Artach, Iona and Colonsay.
Owned and operated by first-class diver David Ainsley, the purpose built 850 horsepower ``Porpoise II`` is one of the most powerful dive charter boats of its size ever built. Capable of speeds approaching 40 miles/hour it offers a unique combination of speed, comfort and stability so that you spend less time traveling and have more time at the dive site.
Enjoy the wind in your face as you speed to your next dive site. Our high viewing platform gives you the best vantage point for seeing the areas rich wildlife and stunning scenery.
Sit in our heated wheelhouse, enjoy an entertaining commentary on the wildlife and sights you encounter, supplemented by videos of local wildlife both above and below the sea.
We provide complimentary hot drinks and snacks and have toilet facilities on board.
Porpoise II is a Revenge 38 renowned for stability and seaworthiness. The comprehensive safety equipment, electronics and crew qualifications allow us the Maritime and Coastguard Agency 60 mile licence (higher than required for our area of operation).
Due to our range of dive sites and the sheltered tidal waters around Balvicar we can offer good diving for all levels of experience in all both summer and winter.
All Weather Diving.
Because Balvicar opens into sheltered sea-lochs, we can find calm dive sites in most weather conditions. Access to the open Atlantic, through Cuan Sound, is only a few minutes away. The topography of the area is such that it allows shore-diving even in the most extreme conditions.
Offshore sites exposed to the Atlantic swell
On settled days some of our best dive sites are to be found some 30 miles west of the Garvellachs. These sites have narrow gullies and walls carpeted in Jewel Anemones, huge shoals of fish and water so clear that you can sometimes see the sun at 40m plus. We have seen Minke Whales on over 50% of trips to these sites. To be almost certain of seeing minke whales, come on one of our six-hour whale-watching trips.
The Garvellachs and the Slate Isles create an area of outstanding beauty above and below the surface, with exceptional water clarity. Complex tides are a feature of this area: our local knowledge will put you on the right part of the site at the right state of the tide.
On some less tidal sites we regularly feed a large number of friendly conger eels.
Spend your surface interval snorkeling with seals or watching dolphins, porpoise, otters and golden eagles. From the infamous Corryvreckan to gentle Dunchonnuil with its tame cuckoo wrasse, we can give you just the sort of exhilarating diving you want.
We regularly visit the `classic` Sound of Mull wrecks and also some less heavily dived wrecks. We are always searching for (and finding) virgin wrecks.
Location description: We visit all the famous Sound of Mull wrecks, including Hispania, Rhondo, Thesis, Shuna and also the Breda.
Our area of operation includes the Garvellachs (part of the Firth of Lorne Special Area of Conservation), the Sound of Mull and the area south of the Isle of Mull, including the spectacular Atlantic pinnacles around the Torran rocks, near Iona.
This whole area is one of outstanding natural beauty. In the Firth of Lorn, Scotland`s best kept diving secret, the huge sea cliffs of uninhabited islands plunge into clear nutrient rich oceanic waters. The rocky seabed, somewhat akin to an underwater mountain range, is richly carpeted in scarce and beautiful sealife, such as anemones, sea fans, sponges and starfish.
The coast and reefs have laid claim to many ships in the past, and today there are a number of spectacular wreck dives to be found here. The Firth of Lorn is a real hot-spot for sightings of porpoise, dolphins and whales; in recent years the West Coast of Scotland has become the best place for sightings of basking shark around Britain. But its not just the astonishing variety of sealife that we enjoy.
There is also a rich and varied wildlife above the waves too. On the shoreline you may also see grey seals, common seals and otters while on the rugged slopes above deer and feral goats roam. Eagles, buzzards and peregrine falcons can often be seen circling above.
This part of the West Coast of Scotland offers World-class drift diving. The archipelago of islands forms numerous tidal channels, with a huge variety from gentle drifts, which may be suitable for the less experienced, to the most extreme dives in Britain. The area includes the infamous Corryvreckan Whirlpool; the dives around the whirlpool are suited to only a very small number of the most experienced and fit divers in the Country.
We understand from our customers that people who do most of their diving on the south coast, may consider scenic and drift dives as being inferior to wreck diving. In the Firth of Lorne this is definitely not the case!
The area has been designated a Special Area of Conservation because of its rocky reefs and porpoises, and surveys show that the abundance and variety of marine life on these reefs, which are the envy of Europe and are second only to St. Kilda.
