Company description
We specialise in scenic coastal cruises, visiting off-shore seal and seabird colonies where we usually see and are regularly joined by the resident Dolphins. Our nature cruises take us to beautiful coves, spectacular cliffs and around magnificent off-shore islands, including the St Tudwals`, Gwylans and Bardsey. We also undertake diving charters for clubs and groups along the same coastline.
``Shearwater`` is licenced for 12 passengers and is registered, maintained and operated in accordance with the regulations prescribed by the Maritime Safety Agency of the Department of Transport.
It will not have escaped anybody`s notice that Shearwater has a flying-bridge. This enables the boat to be controlled from either inside the wheelhouse or from this very high vantage point, which is extremely important in spotting sea mammals and divers!
Galley features on the boat include a sink with a fresh water supply, an electronically controlled cooker and ceramic twin hob, both of which are fuelled by diesel and a refrigerator with separate ice compartment. We also have a stainless steel gas barbecue and twin gas hob mounted on the aft deck.
The boat is also fitted for 240 volt AC shore power with integral chargers for the 4 separate battery banks (2 starting and 2 service for each hull)
Shearwater has 2 Perkins Sabre 215HP turbo diesels, giving a top speed of 25 knots, cruising at about 19/20 knots.
Shearwater is available for daily and weekend diving charters when tides and weather are favourable. A diving day will normally include 2 dives, with depth ranges suitable for the qualifications and experience of the participants.
Shearwater is owned and operated by Alan and Susie Gray, both of whom have been diving for many years. As well as being a qualified Coastal Skipper, Alan is also a BS-AC Advanced Instructor and a R.N. trained Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisor.
Location description:
We dive the coast of the Lleyn Peninsula, including St.Tudwal’s and Bardsey Islands. Strong tidal streams are a feature of the area and knowledge of the tidal characteristics here is needed to enjoy the excellent diving, with visibility in excess of 20 meters when conditions are ideal. From our years of experience diving this area, we find that best diving conditions rarely occur during spring-tide periods. We therefore arrange our dive programme outside these times when our customers are more likely to enjoy the diving at its best.
Dive sites range from quite shallow, sheltered areas with exceptional life (including our extremely curious and playful seals), through to steep drop-offs and submarine pinnacles that rise from very deep water. Strong tidal streams in some areas make it incredibly difficult for fishermen to lay pots, so divers can regularly see unmolested, fully mature lobsters, crabs and crawfish.
We have our wrecks, but they are mainly shallow and broken-up and are not a major feature of the area, but the prolific and varied undersea life certainly is. The Llyn Peninsula enjoys a direct gulf- stream influence providing a point of convergence for species common in both more northerly and more southerly habitats. Examples from more southerly climes include Sunfish, Blue Trigger Fish and Mantis Shrimps.
Leatherback Turtles are seen in the area and migrate here to feed on the spectacular bloom of the Rhysostoma (or Barrel) Jellyfish. Although they breed in the Caribbean, Leatherback turtles are totally adapted to life here and are regarded as a native species. They are the largest of all turtles, with one stranded example, found locally in the late 1980s measuring 9½ ft (3m) long and weighing almost a ton. The Leatherback is, however, quite difficult to spot so please don’t come here expecting us to readily produce one!
