Location description: Throughout the centuries a great number of ships have been wrecked around the shores of the British Isles. Wartime activity is responsible for a large number of shipwrecks and, during wartime, it was common practice for enemy vessels to lie in wait in or around ports or `approaches` to the British Isles. These include the southern approaches, south of Ireland, the northern approaches, between Ireland and Scotland and the channel between Anglesey and the Isle of Man through which ships bound for Liverpool would pass. It stands to reason that a large number of Ships have been lost in these areas.
We have a substantial database of shipwrecks throughout the United Kingdom and we can offer qualified divers from all diving agencies scenic or wreck dives at almost any depth. In the Irish Sea we have a database of over 100 wrecks within one hour of Holyhead. For the longer trips we can offer wrecks in Liverpool Bay, the Southern approaches, the Northern Approaches and the West Coast of Scotland. We have more than enough marks to tailor a trip to the specific needs of your `team` and, weather permitting, we will offer you 2 different wrecks every day no matter how long a trip you have booked.
In addition to sport diving, the crew also has strong links to the `Northern Gas Diving Team` who have pioneered `technical diving` in this country and with their help we have located and positively identified a large number of shipwrecks in the sub 50m range. We are committed to assisting the Northern Gas Team in their pursuit of `virgin` wrecks but would also welcome enquiries from suitably qualified groups or individuals who wish to explore the deeper waters of the Irish Sea. We have a database of over 200 wrecks(within 60 miles of Holyhead) which are all beyond 60m deep, some of which remain undived.
Moving north we have the marks for a substantial number of deep wrecks off the north coast of Ireland extending up the West Coast of Scotland to Cape Wrath and beyond. The Northern Gas Team were instrumental in locating and positively identifying several `virgin` shipwrecks in the Cape Wrath area during 2002 in a joint expedition organised between John Thornton and Ric Waring, the country`s premier technical diver. If required, we can arrange for Ric to give short seminars on any aspect of technical diving followed with a `tekkie dive` on a wreck of your choice. IRISH MIST offers full trimix mixing facilities
