Weymouth Diving and the charter vessel Wey Chieftain have been chartered by scuba divers to visit shipwrecks and scenic dive sites for years. We have a long standing relation with our regular clubs and customers and offer local diving to newcomers alike who wish to explore and enjoy the underwater coastline and the hundreds of sunken shipwrecks of Dorset England.
Shipwrecks, diving shipwrecks, researching shipwrecks and searching for shipwrecks has been the main concentration of our buisiness since we began taking our first customers out to sea. We have a huge database of wrecks we visit more so infact than you could wish to dive in a lifetime. Why not check out just some of the wrecks you can visit local and deep offshore click here
Wey Chieftain was Englands second dive charter vessel to be fitted with a divers tail lift, the lift enables divers to exit the water on an electrically powered platform. The lift drops down into the water the diver swims in holds onto the hand rails and is lifted to the main deck level. This is of particular aid to disabled customers and technical divers laden with heavy equipment.
Our company undertakes survey work and test programs for modern marine electronics and technology. We use professional tools for mapping known wreck sites or geographical features and are able to undertake archaeological and commercial search programs. Multibeam or sidescan work is incorporated into the very latest software for impressive results.
WEY CHIEFTAIN III: A catamaran designed to take divers and all their equipment out to dive sites along the Channel. Up to 12 divers can travel in comfort in the big enclosed cabin, thanks to the wave piercing hulls and the stable design. The boat has all the latest navigation and communication technology, including sonar, radar and satellite positioning. She can go over thirty knots with the two 350HP diesel engines and can remain stationary over diving positions in most sea conditions. An Australian designed displacement power catamaran tried and tested in the international market, the vessel is renowned for it`s ability to carry heavy loads at speed with a high degree of comfort. The wave piercing bows provide a much softer ride than is normally associated with high speed vessels of conventional design. There is a diver lift on the stern which also has extra benches and rails for securing equipment, a massive wheelhouse and deck area seats all divers and kit. The Wey Chieftain is moored in Weymouth harbour with quick and easy access to the sea and operates diving charters throughout the Summer season.
Location description: The area has much to offer from your first open water dives to deep channel expeditions. It is extremely rare for the determined diver to be blown out. The Isle of Portland offers a fantastic lea and in all but the strongest of southerly winds it is possible to find shelter and even then for the really determined there is Portland harbour. The two wars have blessed Weymouth and Portland with a wealth of wrecks to suit all tastes and abilities, from intact submarines to P&O liners – we have it all. Due to the shelter, the area offers great training dives on the many shallow wrecks to the fantastic reefs and ledges that run all sides of the island.
Apart from the wartime wrecks we have some superb post war sites the most famous of which is the Aeolian Sky. With recent advances in sonar and seabed mapping systems we are now beginning to realise the full potential for exploring pre-twentieth century wrecks and a whole new area for diver exploration is opening up. Grahame and the Wey Chieftain have been synonymous with deep wreck exploration and they continue to push the edges, the new frontiers being the famous Hurd deep and the surrounding area as well as the western approaches. So from the shallow reefs to the one hundred and eighty metre deep wrecks it is all on Weymouth and Portland’s doorstep.
Coupled with good differential GPS navigation it is simple to gain knowledge of the surrounding seabed and the way the wreck lies. The analysis of the sonar image can reveal wreck features that help greatly in the identification and possible elimination from a specific wreck hunt without the need to dive. Old wooden wrecks are notoriously difficult to find with most of the structure decayed or buried. For such wrecks a combination of sidescan sonar and magnetometer are used. The sidescan looking for items like protruding ribs and other debris and the magnetometer revealing the presence of ferrous metal artefacts such as iron strapping.
Anchors etc.
Using Geodas it is possible to overlay all the data mapping and mosaicing large areas of the seabed. When a possible site is identified, it can be further investigated using an acoustic sub-bottom profiler that will reveal the presence of buried objects within the top layers of sand and silt, again this information can be overlayed with the Sonar and Magnetometer data.
