Company description With 12 years experience of exploring the wrecks of the Norwegian Fjords, skipper/diver Gordon Wadsworth has unrivalled expertise in cruise-diving this unique region.
Based on the live aboard `Jane R`, Gordon travels up and down the entire Norwegian coastline from May to October each year. Tours vary from fixed itineraries such as the Narvik Destroyers up to extended expeditions such as Bodo and the Lofotens islands, Tromso and the Tirpitz site, and North Cape to the Russian border.
From November to April, the Jane R operates in Western Scotland.
The Jane `R` is a converted traditional Scottish herring drifter. This class of vessel has proven to be one of the most seaworthy crafts afloat, and is highly suited to liveaboard diving requirements.
Her powerful engine and heavy displacement hull allows her to tackle most sea conditions. At 22 metres she is one of the larger vessels offering a stable and spacious diving platform while maintaining manoeuvrability, she has a proven long-range capability.
SAFETY & EQUIPMENT
SAFETY is the biggest concern for everyone on a boat and the Jane `R` complies with the Code of Practice (Category 2, Marine Coastguard Agency) for 12 passengers and 4 crew. She is fitted with all the latest safety equipment and adheres to international safety regulations.
A main engine-driven compressor and the bank system with long whip makes bottle filling quiet and efficient. O2 cleaned cylinders and weights are provided. Nitrox and Trimix are available, with an oxygen booster pump available to facilitate gas blending.
BELOW DECKS
ACCOMMODATION is spacious with fourteen berths in six cabins - single and double berths available, most with washbasins. The boat has two bathrooms with toilets, showers and a bath, and central heating.
Three cooked meals per day are provided, as well as tea and snacks. Vegetarians can be catered for with advance notice.
ON DECK
A large saloon with comfortable easy seating is situated behind the galley where you can enjoy eating or just watch the scenery glide by.
Around the stern, a shelter-deck provides cover from the elements. The cabins are reached through a heated wet /dry porch fitted with ample power sockets. The open fore-deck has generous space for kitting up, with a central bench and kit bins. There is ample space for extra equipment associated with tech diving, or just sunbathing.
Large walk through entry gates and an easy to use ladder are other important features.
For the dedicated and adventurous diver, Jane`R` can get you to wrecks other divers never see. You can be actively involved in the research and planning & team work essential in expeditions of this type! These 7or10 day trips may be extended to include Northern & Southern Norway, Denmark, or the Baltic and other destinations of your choice. The skipper has 30 years diving experience, with 10 years specializing in diving the wrecks in this region. By popular request from regular divers, Jane`R` has been diving her way North to Narvik, Lofoten and Tromso in Northern Norway during this summer. At Narvik there are numerous WW2 warships and merchantships, the result of two naval battles. Jane`R` is licensed to dive at these exclusive sites. At Lofoten there are many islands with some of the best scenery in Norway. Every year Jane`R` discovers new wrecks in this area.
Location description: The sheltered locations of many of these wrecks (we have now found 80 in the last 10 years) means that they are often near the surface whilst the remainder of the wreck is at a gradual incline suitable for novices and experts alike with no special equipment being necessary. The water temperatures is similar to Scotland, 15`C surface and around 8`C at depth.
Scenic diving is everywhere with prolific marine life and unfamiliar species on walls and wrecks. Almost continuous daylight presents excellent photographic opportunities above and below water. The weather at this time of year is usually more stable than the UK adding to your enjoyment. There is no fixed itinerary whilst cruise-diving the fjords, with so many sites to explore your involvement is most welcome. Diver or non-diver you well be impressed with this beautiful country.
During May, June and July, Bergen becomes our base for diving the fjords of Western Norway. This region contains numerous wreck sites almost all in sheltered locations suitable for both novice and experienced divers.
Divers are picked up from the ferry terminal in Bergen, with diving starting on the day of arrival. The wrecks in this locality include many large WW2 Freighters sunk while at anchor, close under the cliffs in the fjords.
During August & September the Jane R sails 700 miles north into the arctic circle to be based at Narvik for charters in Northern Norway. This region contains numerous wreck sites, almost all the sites are suitable for both novice and experienced divers. UK divers are impressed by the diving conditions; most sites are in none-tidal clear sheltered water with temperatures around 8C at depth, 13C near the surface. This is also the best time of year for good weather, with long sunny daylight hours and it can be surprisingly hot.
The wrecks at Narvik include many WW2 warships and large freighters. More than 30 ships were sunk in the harbor during the two battles of 1940. In addition to this, 6 German, 1 Polish, and 3 British destroyers lie in the nearby fjords. Jane R is licensed to dive 11 sites including a seaplane.
Three day excursions can also be made from Narvik to include other sites such as north to Harstad or west to the Lofoten Isles. There are also one way trips north or south to/from Tromso which include the Tirpitz site. To do this divers fly in & out of different airports. Plans have also been made by regular customers to dive from Tromso around North Cape to Kirkenes at the Russian border.
