Company description
The MV FeBrina is fast becoming one of the world`s best known live-aboard dive boats. Given a five star rating in all categories in a leading dive guide and highly recommended in the prestigious Harper & Queen, FeBrina is a 72 foot long vessel, fully air-conditioned and fitted with every convenience to make your trip one of the most enjoyable you will ever experience.
FeBrina cruises from Walindi, the world renowned dive resort located on the North Coast of New Britain. Walindi, with its fern draped bungalows nestled amongst beach front rain forest, is a perfect home base from which to begin and end your FeBrina dive trip. Diving Kimbe Bay and all the offshore reefs outside the Bay including the Witu Islands and North Coast ``Fathers`` reefs, FeBrina is your sea borne platform that provides easy access to spectacular dive areas, offering 5 dives per day. Some of those reefs are rarely visited by divers or photographers. They are remote with superb visibility and prolific fish life.
FeBrina is an extremely comfortable boat in all ways, with a friendly and experienced crew providing top class service. Sea worthy and stable, accommodation is in seven roomy twin share cabins with ample storage space. Meals provided by a top class chef are plentiful and fresh, with lots of fruit between dive snacks.
M.V. FeBrina dives the areas of Kimbe Bay and surrounding waters along the northern coast of New Britain, such as the Witu Islands to the north west and Fathers Reefs to the north east of Kavieng. These waters are home to prolific and diverse marine creatures and corals. Recent marine surveys in Kimbe Bay have recorded over 350 species of reef building corals and over 900 species of fish. The reefs are a photographer`s paradise. Pristine and colorful corals are home to a variety of fish, crustacean and invertebrate life. Many of the reefs have resident schools of barracuda, tuna, and jacks. A range of shark species are regularly sighted, including hammerheads and silvertips, particularly at the outer reefs of Fathers and Witu. Visibility ranges from 80 to 150 feet, depending on the season and water temperatures range between 85 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather is tropical with little seasonal variation.
Location description:
Most diving is from FeBrina`s spacious dive deck, with easy access via the water level dive platform. Some of the reefs are current washed, without current the spectacular marine life would not be there, however, the wide range of dive sites means that it is not necessary to dive at a site if currents are unmanageable at the time.
Nitrox is available on board from March 2005 at an additional cost ... let the dive crew know if you would like to take advantage of this facility when you get on board. Cost is USD$10 per tank, or USD$150 for a 7 day trip, USD$200 for a 10 day trip, with payment made at the end of your trip.
Most popular dive sites:
*Restorf Island
The waters around Restorf Island hold an incredible diversity of marine life. It would be possible to spend a week diving here and still find new things in the various habitat types around the island. Depth is from the surface, down to 32m, and this site is excellent for snorkeling. On the main reef there is a profusion of coral growth, especially gorgonian fax and black corals, with anemones occupied by Clown Anemonefish near the boat mooring. There is a great variety of reef fishes along the full length of the main reef. At the end of the reef, Grey Reef Sharks are often seen.
*Susan`s Reef
Dense stands of Red Sea Whips Ellisella sp. give Susan`s Reef a unique aesthetic quality that sets it apart from other Walindi reefs. Susan`s is a submerged ridge, connected to a much larger reef by a saddle, which creates a channel between the reefs. A stunning collection of corals is particularly rich at the southern end of the reef where it connects to the saddle. This area is crammed with hard and soft corals and a wide range of other phyla. The more obvious invertebrates include sponges, ascidians, bryozoans and a variety of annelid worms such as fan worms and Christmas tree worms. Particularly spectacular large gorgonian fans, red sea whips and elephant ear sponges, everything adorned with colourful crinoids, delight all who dive here.
*Christine`s Reef
Christine`s Reef is actually a collection of reefs joined by underwater ridges to form a large horseshoe shape complex. A photographer`s paradise, Christine`s features a beautiful collection of extremely large barrel sponges, many different gorgonian fan corals and red whip gorgonians, along with staghorn and plate corals in the sha
llower areas. As will all Walindi reefs, reef associated fishes are abundant and diverse. Commonly seen are Butterflyfishes, Angelfishes, Snapper and Surgeonfishes. A number of more cryptic fishes have also been seen at Christine`s. They include Spiny Devilfish Inimicus didactylus, Harlequin Ghost Pipefish Solenostomus paradoxus, and Crocodile Flatehead Cymbacephalus beauforti. To find these types of fish you need to look carefully and to have a bit of luck as well. On the sand you will probably also find a bizarre sea cucumber Thelenota rubolineata. This ``horny`` sea cucumber has a maze of red lines that make it rather attractive than most of its relatives.
