Location description:
We have over 40 sites along our coastline 37 of which are in the Aqaba Marine Park. There is a large variety of differing topography and differing habitats within a small area. This side of the Gulf we have lots of upwelling from the depths bringing nutrients to the reef and thus prolific marine life. The reefs are protected and unspoilt.
We are continually exploring and finding new sites, particularly in the technical diving range (over 40m). There are also 4 wrecks to dive, the most famous being the ``Cedar Pride`` and the most recent an American M40 Anti-aircraft vehicle. There is something for every diver.
We normally dive from Laila One, our purpose built dive boat. She is owned by Dive Aqaba and berthed at the Royal Yacht Club. We also charter Yasmina, a 14m ex-tug boat converted for divers.
Some of them:
*The Cedar Pride
In 1983 King Hussein decided to buy the ship and appointed his son Price Abdullah (now King Abdullah II) to oversee the project of creating an artificial reef in Aqaba. James Fylan was appointed to get the job done. The wreck was made clean and diver safe. Meanwhile Prince Abdullah had dived many possible sites in Aqaba and narrowed the place for scuttling the ship down to five possibilities. Finally he decided on the place where she now rests between Rainbow Reef and the Japanese Gardens. On the 16th November 1985 James Fylans team towed the ship out to the site. Moorings where placed at four places to ensure she sunk in the right place. Three charges of explosives where place on the outside of the hull on her starboard side. With all divers out of the water they were detonated simultaneously. Nothing seems to happen for a long time, the old girl did not want to sink. Slowly she started to list to her port side as the water poured in. Eventually the bow went under first and she slowly sank to her final resting place bridging two coral reefs, which allows for a dramatic swim-through under the wreck.
*Power Station
The Power Station is named after the small oil fired power station on the coast road to the North of the dive site. This is the place where, on the chart, the one hundred and two hundred metre contour lines hit the coast. It is a spectacular wall dive, conducted as a drift from North to South. Sharks and other large pelagics are often spotted here. There are several humphead wrasse and some large moray eels. The wall and drop off are spectacular and there is an abundance of life to entertain you on the reef slope and in the shallows. If conducting a technical dive requiring decompression this makes the required stops a bonus rather than a chore.
*Ras Al Yemenea
This provides an excellent training area for divers with standing depth down to 5 metres on a flat sandy bottom – here they can practice without any danger of damaging any corals.
