Northern Tech Diver is committed to providing our students with a superior training package that provides the highest level of student comfort, confidence and diver proficiency in the the industry.
All training is delivered in a courteous, professional manner. Our courses are a blend of information sessions and practical application. There is a distinct emphasis on the practical in-water aspect of our training. We firmly believe that you can only learn to dive while you are in the water.
Our style training is unique in the dive industry. We do not believe in minimum course content offerings. We offer superior course curriculums that are demanding and fast paced. This level of dedication demands that the student be an active participant in the learning process. Prior to the commencement of training, all students are required to go through an orientation process comprising of completion of all necessary paper work-including a medical history form-and reviewing and confirming the course schedule. You will also receive a home study kit and assignments to be completed prior to class. To finish the orientation, we will conduct a brief scuba equipment overview, then professionally fit your equipment and collect all course fees.
Location description: This region of the world contains some of the best preserved wrecks spanning over the past 200 years. For over 200 hundred years the 1000 Islands region and St Lawrence Seaway have claimed many a hapless vessel through rocky shoal and severe weather. The fresh water and slow currents in Lake Ontario have done an excellent job of preserving many of these wrecks, making this region one of the best places in the world to explore sunken wrecks.
*The Floundered Aloha
The Aloha was built by William Dulac at Mt. Clemens, Michigan. While in tow by the C.W. Chamberlain, en route to Kingston, the Aloha foundered in a gale with the loss of one life. In 1964 the Aloha was discovered by local divers Barbara Carson, Nathaniel Sudds and Lloyd Shales in August 1963, the hull is mostly intact, and this site is used as a second dive or training dive. Most of the artifacts have been removed and the winch can be viewed at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes, located in Kingston, Ontario. The Effie Mae is located very close by for your diving pleasure. The most fascinating part of the Aloha is the Roman numeral depth markings on the bow. As well as divers, there are plenty of fish to inspect.
*The Cornwall
Launched as the ``Kingston`` at Montreal in 1854, she was one of the finest Canadian steamboats of her day on the Upper St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Indeed, when the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured Canada in 1860, she was chosen to be his `floating palace`. In 1872, she was gutted by fire while off Grenadier Island in the St. Lawrence River. Rebuilt as the Bavarian, she again burned in the fall of 1873. The iron hull, rebuilt yet again, in Power`s shipyard at Kingston, was this time christened ``Algerian.`` In 1905, she was renamed ``Cornwall``. Near the end of 1911, she was purchased by the Calvin Company of Garden Island, opposite Kingston. She was converted to a well-equipped rescue vessel and used until around 1925.
In the early 1930`s, during a snowstorm, the stripped Cornwall was scuttled near Amherst Island close to the graveyard where she remained until being discovered by Rick Neilson in 1989. There is still much to see on this wreck. The boilers and some steam pipes are still present; wooden barrels are scattered about; the windlass is still attached to the bow section; and there is even a bed still there. Most importantly, both feathering paddle wheels are intact.
*The SM Douglas
Built in 1897 this iron hulled steamer named the White star, was built for the Oakville Navigation company for a passenger route of Oakville, Toronto, bronte and Hamilton area. While being refitted during the summer of 1903 the White star burned and was declared a total loss. Again in 1926 she was gutted by fire in Hamilton, then sold to John Solwards who rebuilt her as a coal barge for 13 years before being abandoned yet again. In 1985 the SM Douglas was finally towed out of Kingston harbour and scuttled. She was reloctated in 1997.
