Welcome to The Sanctuary
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is a Federally protected marine area offshore of California`s central coast. Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the MBNMS encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 5,322 square miles of ocean. Supporting one of the world`s most diverse marine ecosystems, it is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fishes, invertebrates and plants in a remarkably productive coastal environment. The MBNMS was established for the purpose of resource protection, research, education, and public use of this national treasure. The MBNMS is part of a system of 13 National Marine Sanctuaries administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Location description:
Welcome to the Sanctuary! With 5,300 square miles of water and 300 miles of coastline there is no shortage of areas to snorkel or dive in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Sanctuary boasts some of the most popular dive spots in central and northern California, including the Breakwater in Monterey, Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, the Pinnacles at Carmel Bay and Whaler`s Cove in Point Lobos State Park. Visibility varies from site to site, but averages 20 to 30 feet most of the year, with peaks of 60 feet from September to November. Water temperatures average in the mid-50s degrees farenheight year-round with temperatures dropping into the 40s at deeper sites. Whether you are tying to find out tomorrow`s weather forecast, where to dive, or what you might see, the following resources can help make your dive safer more enjoyable!
