Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers, Inc.

Associations Organisation Scuba Diving (English)

Service:
  • Dive Club
  • Spearfishing
  • Wreck Diving
Company description The Ohio Council began in 1959, shortly after the first diving clubs were formed in Ohio. Today, it is one of the oldest scuba diving organizations in the country, older than most certification agencies.
Over the years, the mission of the council has changed to meet the needs of its members. Originally formed to oversee training standards for scuba enthusiasts and to govern inter-club competitions, the Ohio Council has defined its mission in the nineties to include providing a unified voice for Ohio`s divers in legislative matters.
With many years of hard work and the enthusiasm and support of our members, we have attained (and continually seek) representation on the Governor`s Advisory Committee to the Submerged Lands law affecting Lake Erie`s shipwrecks. Divers Against Pollution is another of our activities. We sponsor and participate in underwater clean-ups and keep apprised of water quality issues. We also offer a scholarship for members pursuing a degree in marine-related education. As always, the Ohio Council gives clubs the opportunity to interact. A non-profit organization, the Ohio Council currently comprises 18 Associate Scuba Clubs from all over the Buckeye State. It is run by three, three year trustees, and four, one year trustees, all elected from the member clubs.
One new three year trustee is elected each year, and the senior of the three acts as chairman/director. There is also a treasurer (elected), and a secretary (appointed). The Faceplate, our quarterly newsletter has an appointed editor/publisher. The Website Director is also appointed as are several appointed standing committee chairpersons.
We hold three meetings every year, each in conjunction with a diving activity. Member clubs have equal opportunity to host a Council event in their area. Our biggest annual event is the Banquet Ball, an awards celebration that includes nationally known speakers, a photo competition, a banquet, and entertainment.
We attempt to keep members up to date through our newsletter, The Faceplate. Published quarterly, the Faceplate offers our member clubs the opportunity to promote themselves. Club News updates are found in every issue. During the active diving months, meeting and club dive schedules are printed all on one handy dive calendar.
The Ohio Council doesn`t function like a club; we`re not here to take diving events away from clubs. We encourage clubs to hold all the events they can, and help promote the event all over the state. When an event they envision is beyond their current scope, we hope to be able to offer support and information.
You can join The Ohio Council through a member club for $9 annually, or on your own for $12 per year. We also offer corporate and professional memberships.
One of the jobs of the OCSSDI is to watch and influence legislation that can effect divers and the diving community. Several years ago, the Council became aware the state was creating a submerged lands act (protection of shipwrecks), and became involved in making sure that divers have a say on the controlling board. A member of the OCSSDI is currently on that board and makes sure the voice of divers is heard.
Your membership and participation in the OCSSDI allows divers to have influence on the issues effecting them though the combined resources of the organization. In turn, the council can inform you of changes to laws, and new issued as they come up.
Medical Oxygen: Council members recently got an update to Ohio`s law passed that allows for divers to legally purchase, posses, and use medical oxygen. Before this law update, it was difficult to get refills of Oxygen bottles for first aid to divers without a doctor`s prescription, and technically illegal to administer without being a medical provider.
Other Laws that effect Diving in Ohio:
•Dive Flag Law
•Shipwreck and Salvage Laws
•Spear Fishing Laws
The OCSSDI sponsors an educational scholarship for students to pursue careers related to marine biology, underwater archaeology, and other related fields. The OCSSDI raises funds for the scholarship through raffles at the Ohio Scubafest show and the annual OCSSDI Banquet Ball, as well as donations from member clubs. Additional financial support is provided by the Underwater Images Photo/Video competition.
