Company description The history of national dive training in the United States began with the development of the YMCA Scuba Program. As divers and instructors, we have dedicated ourselves to the quest for ever-better ways to teach others to enjoy the underwater world. That is our heritage. Throughout the history of sport diving, YMCAs have maintained unsurpassed standards. Those standards have changed as our knowledge and depth of experience have changed. Others have followed. That is our record.
The first instructors, certified in Chicago, Ill., in 1959, provided the dedication and knowledge that became our tradition. We now have trained divers throughout the world and helped to form other dive-training organizations. Throughout our history we have worked tirelessly to improve diver safety and enjoyment with a parallel sense of responsibility toward the underwater world which we explore.
Our accomplishments are known. Today, as in the past, no sport diver in the world is better trained than the individual who has met the high standards of YMCA Scuba.
In the 40+ years since our inception, YMCA Scuba has continued to provide the highest level of community-oriented education for divers and instructors based on the YMCA mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
In 1980 YMCA SCUBA became a federation of the World Underwater Federation (C.M.A.S.), thus allowing our instructors and divers the distinct designation of this international certification. Due to our high standards, YMCA SCUBA remains the only SCUBA certification organization in the United States to offer the C.M.A.S. international certification card.
We provide diving courses. Learning to scuba dive is safe and affordable, and requires a modest amount of training. An entry-level certification course takes approximately 32 hours to complete. Classes may take place during day or evening times, and take from a couple of weekends to several weeks to complete. In order to earn a scuba certification, you will participate in classroom sessions and practice essential diving skills in a pool. Finally, you will test your knowledge on a written exam and apply your skills during training dives in a lake, quarry, spring, or ocean. Upon completion, you will receive a certification card that identifies you as a trained diver, allowing you to rent scuba equipment, participate in advanced training, and explore diving destinations.
Location description: YMCA SCUBA Courses:
*Snorkeling
YMCA Snorkeling introduces individuals and families to the recreation of examining underwater magic from above. Because there is no age requirement for snorkeling, it is an activity that can be shared by the whole family.
*Skin Diving
YMCA Skin Diving is designed for swimmers and snorkelers who want to expand their aquatic exploration. With simple equipment and basic techniques, swimmers ages eight and older will find this course enjoyable and challenging. The underwater world is a fascinating place that can be discovered with a minimal amount of effort and the use of a mask, fins, and a snorkel.
*Open Water Diver
The YMCA Open Water Diver course is for individuals ages 12 and older. Learning to scuba dive is safe and affordable, and requires a modest amount of training. An entry-level certification course takes approximately 32 hours to complete.
*Open Water Diver II
YMCA Open Water II is designed to give certified scuba divers two additional open water dives. This guided experience is important for new divers who want more training before going out and diving without supervision.
*Advanced Open Water Diver
The YMCA Advanced Open Water Diver course is for divers who want to expand their knowledge and diving experience to include a variety of diving environments.

*Gold Master Diver
Certification in this course is the highest and most prestigious nonleadership rating that can be attained by a YMCA Scuba diver. It is considered the supreme standard of diving excellence and is a recognition of expert training. This course is often offered to students over a period of time rather than in a formal class environment. Divers completing this course will have attained at least 25 open-water experiences including dives to 100 feet in depth.
