Company description Diverhead.com is a free web-based community for active recreational divers in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. Members of Diverhead.com organize dives, post dive site information, write trip reports, upload photos, and share their experiences and opinions on diving.
Diverhead.com is not a dive club and does not have an official, centralized structure. Instead, each member is an equal part of the community and is encouraged to participate as much as possible.
We use the website as our primary means of communication to coordinate real-world activities. On most weekends, there are at least a couple Diverhead.com members diving somewhere. We also coordinate occasional non-diving outings to restaurants, movies, etc.
The word diverhead was originally coined by founding Diverhead.com members Narcosis and Abyss to capture the physical and emotional state they often found themselves in during and/or after SCUBA diving. Something akin to a ``natural high,`` diverhead affects each person differently. It can cause overly-generous estimates of visibility. It can cause you to exclaim, ``That was a great dive!`` as you crawl out of a mudhole. It can make you mistake an undersized, 3-inch Dungeness crab for a basketball-sized Puget Sound King Crab. It can make you laugh at a joke before the wolf eel sharing it with you delivers the punch line. Whatever the effect, experiencing diverhead is always a sign of a good dive.
Location description: Diverhead.com is a virtual community, and there are no requirements that members be located in a particular geographic region. However, many of our members are currently located in and around Eugene/Springfield, Oregon, USA, and many of our activities take place in that area. However, divers from other parts of the world are always welcome at Diverhead.com.
Posted: Sun Mar 26, 2006 2:55 pm Post subject: A little history on the North Jetty dive site ``North Jetty-The North Jetty (as well as the South Jetty) is an on-going U.S. Army Corp of Engineers project designed and modified to improve boat navigation on the Siuslaw River in Florence. Initially built in 1893 to provide a stable river entrance channel, the North (and South) Jetty has undergone several length changes. In 1917 the North Jetty was extended to help provide a minimum-depth river channel 8 feet deep; in 1958 it was extended to help provide a channel 12 feet deep. Most recently, (remember I wrote this 1993), the North and South Jetties were extended out equally to the 30-foot level of the ocean, so as to provide a relatively stable river entrance channel depth of 18 feet from the Pacific Ociean to 1500 feet up-river and vice versa.
Fish Hatchery-In spring of 1978, the US. Fish and Wildlife Department issued a permit to DOMSEA, a privately-owned company that wanted to operate a fish hatchery for profit at the North Jetty. They collected Chum, Chinook, and Coho salmon eggs, and after the fish hatched, released them into the Siuslaw River, where it was hoped that agood percentage would return to the hatchery (a fish ladder of boards and sand bags were constructed in anticipation of their return.) Between the years of 1978-1980 some Coho salmon retuned, while between the years of 1981-1983 some Chum salmon retuned. However, no Chinook salmon were returning to the hatchery. Citing poor fish attration, DOMSEA turned its hatchery over to OREGON AQUAFEED in 1984. However, in 1985 they too abandoned the hatchery, as no fish returned (they were all by-passing the hatchery and swimming upstream). Soon thereafter, the fish ladder was taken apart and the hatchery closed down, leaving the hatchery structure and pipes behind as they (were) seen (then).
