Agate / Geologic
Dive an underwater compass trail
Want to find something special and over a million years old? The geologic formations in the Keweenaw are among the earth`s oldest, the rich copper deposits have been mined here for thousands of years.
Take a basic non-certification course on agateering in Copper Harbor. This is 2 hour class that covers the indentification and location of semi precious gemstones. This is a one tank dive (air furnished). Read about Agate diving with Jake in Scott Wolters new book! Lake Superior Agate - One Man`s Journey.

Classes
Learn how to dive from a NAUI certified instructor
Join Gerald ``Jake`` Anderson for one of three classes. Jake is certified by NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).
The first class is the E.S.E., or Entry Scuba Experience, also known as the ``Try It Class``. This is a 2 hour class and a 2 hour water session in Lake Superior. Call for times and dates. An inclusive fee covers all rental equipment needed. This is a non-certified class. Must be 12 years or older. Bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to try something new. Price is $65.00
The second class is the NAUI Passport, or Resort Program. Call for various ways to complete this course. With ``at home`` study, certification can be completed in 5-6 days. This includes the full E.S.E. class plus one extra dive. Completion of this program entitles the person to dive anytime at any NAUI facility with a NAUI instructor. The fee for this class covers all rental equipment, books, and certification card. You must have your own mask, snorkel, and fins. Fee is $325.00
The third class is the Basic Scuba Certification. You will attain depths to 60 feet. This class takes 7 days to complete. It is a one week course taken Monday through Friday from 9-5pm & all day Saturday and Sunday. There is also a 3 week course available during evenings in July and August. You must register 2 weeks prior to enrollment. The fee for this class includes rental equipment, although you should have your own mask, snorkel, and fins at this point.

Location description: Take a charter to any of these sites. The advanced site is the Mesquite located in Keystone Bay. The U.S. coast guard cutter Mesquite ran aground in the fall of 1989 off the Keweenaw Peninsula. The ship was intentionally sunk in about 110 feet of water. The wreck is in excellent condition with virtually all of her equipment on deck. Interior exploration should be reserved for very experienced divers with proper equipment. Visibility at this site is 50 feet. Too see the location of this wreck, view the Keweenaw Bottomland Preserve map.
The next location is the Sawtooth Reef in Eagle River. This is a basic dive. This site holds the remains of four ships: The Pickards, a 233 foot wooden steamer, the Colorado, a 255 foot wooden steamer, the Fern a 65 foot tug, and the Tioga, a 286 foot iron freighter. The reef is in 35 foot of water.
The third location is the City of St. Joseph in Eagle Harbor. This is a basic dive. This 254 foot steel barge ran aground North of Eagle Harbor in 1942. The remains of the ship lies in 40 feet of water or less. Divers will find large sections of the hull, machinery, and other artifacts that make for excellent exploration and backdrops for underwater photography.
