Scuba Diving International Introduces On-line Learning
LEARN SCUBA FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME COMPUTER.
The online SDI Diver Training and Certification programs allows an individual anywhere in the world only to study online, then complete their in-water training with a participating SDI Facility. The course is an implementation of the premiere online diver training system introduced by SCUBA-training.net in October of 2002.
The process is simple and straightforward:
1. Students register for the course on the web by clicking the Enroll Now link or the SDI LOGO at the top left of this page.
2. They learn online at their own pace and on their own schedule. Lessons can be repeated as desired, and the student`s progress is measured by brief quizzes on each topic.
3. As soon as the student has passed the final online quiz, they visit any SDI-affiliated dive store (Adventure Dive and Snorkel) for in-water training, leading to certification.
``This program makes terrific use of SCUBA-training.net`s state-of-the-art interactive learning system``, says company founder Dan Nafe, ``There`s a little science to be learned when you become a diver, and studies have shown that a comprehensive multimedia curriculum that progresses at the student`s own pace is one of the best methods for learning and retaining this sort of information.``
SCUBA-Training.net is an application service provider and was introduced at DEMA 2002. It is the most widely recognized provider of online distance learning services in the recreational diving industry. SDI was formed in 1999 by some of diving`s most experienced instructors to bring the sport to a wider audience.

Location description: For divers who enjoy great scenery above and below the water, the island of Tobago is the place to go. The island combines lush, thick forests picturesque, clean beaches and lively, colorful dive sights all in one place.
Enjoying the scenery does not come easy. Our recent eight day trip from Richmond, VA required a 2 hour drive to DC and a series of three flights via Miami and Barbados. The return trip required an overnight stay in Trinidad followed by two additional flights to get to DC. All in all, it took almost an entire day of travel to get to the island which is located just off the coast of Venezuela.
It is this relative remoteness however that was attractive to us. Compared to many Caribbean islands which have become overrun with a daily armada of cruise ships, Tobago still manages to maintain some of the native island “feel”.
Our visit was comprised of two days exploring the island by car and six days exploring by sea aboard the Peter Hughes live-aboard boat, Wind Dancer. While the weather did not cooperate for much of the week, the scenery still proved to be very nice above and below the water.
We arrived in Tobago on the Friday after Thanksgiving and spent much of our first day lounging and relaxing at the Hilton Plantation hotel - a popular layover spot for travelers arriving the day before the boat`s departure. While clean and comfortable, the hotel is in the middle of nowhere so guests are captive to the hotel restaurant`s high prices and mediocre quality. Late on Saturday afternoon, we were picked-up at the hotel by the Peter Hughes host and transported to the port in Scarborough to board the boat.
After spending the first night at the harbor getting settled in, we were off before sunrise the next morning to start our week of virtually non-stop diving. Almost the entire island of Tobago is surrounded by dive sites. Our original itinerary was to explore a few of the sights on the southeast corner of the island - the windward side - and then make our way counterclockwise around the island exploring a variety of reefs, walls and wrecks along the way. The first two dive sites on Sunday morning were about one hour south of the port, just off the coast from the airport. After our in-room coffee service and a hearty, made to order breakfast, we were ready to go! While the surface was rolling with 2-3 foot swells, the conditions under the water were calm with about 70 foot visibility.
By lunch, we had completed two dives (with a morning snack served between dives) and were starting to feel heavier winds and seas. One of the great things about the live-aboard is that if you don`t like the conditions where you are diving, you move the boat to another site. So the crew pulled up the anchor and we headed to calmer seas on the leeward side of the island.
