An Alternative Approach To Deep Diver Training
by Peter Schulz, ``There is, in my opinion, a better approach to deep diver training than just taking one course after the other. In particular, I think that most experienced divers can make better use of their time and money by a do-it- yourself, learn-as-you go approach. What follows is my recommended approach to mastering the science and art of deep diving.
Step 1. Get a good basic education via self study. The Deep Diver Independent Learning Course is a good starting point. Then, read a few books on the subject. My favorite is Deep Diving by Bret Gilliam.
Step 2. Get the core equipment needed to properly dive double tanks. If you are going to be a deep diver you need the right equipment for diving doubles.
To get started, you do not need to own your own double tanks if you can rent or borrow them. But you should own your own back plate, harness and wings for diving doubles. And, you should own at least two first and second stage regulators that are suitable for deep diving.
Note: You may be tempted to start with less equipment e.g. single tanks with ``H`` valves, a tech ``wanabe`` BC, a rented or borrowed second regulator, and etc. Based on my experience in teaching tech diving this approach just does not work. If, your passion or your finances don`t support doing it right, you will be better served by not doing it at all.
Step 3. Get experience diving doubles. Start with a few dives in a familiar setting. Then do some dives on recreational depth ship wrecks.
While doing these dives you should concentrate on perfecting your diving skills with doubles.
Begin by rigging your equipment properly with the emphasis on simplicity and streamlining. Then, during your dives, develop some of the basic tech diving skills e.g. flawless neutral-buoyant / no-silt swimming, efficient use of breathing gasses, sharing air with a buddy, and the deployment of a lift bag.
And finally, practice, practice, practice, until you are as comfortable and proficient at diving doubles as you are at diving singles.
After you have completed all of the above activities, enroll in an Advanced Nitrox Course. Follow this course with some tech diving on your own to perfect and enjoy your newly acquired skills. And finally, from a formal training standpoint, skip Deep Air and take a Trimix Course.
Location description:
Boca Raton is located in Palm Beach County 25 miles South of Palm Beach International Airport and 20 miles North of the Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport.
Two coral reefs run parallel to our shore at depths of 40 feet and 60 feet. These reefs lie about one mile off shore. Ship wrecks lie between and beyond the reefs. Inhabitants include just about every fish and critter in Paul Humann`s series of books.
Our favorite reefs: Lynn`s Reef, the Delray Ledges, Finks Grouper Hole with Caribbean Reef Sharks, the Sanctuary, and Mike`s Twin Ledges. On reef dives, we drift dive in small groups, each group with it`s own flag and float. When we surface, the boat is there waiting for us.
Our favorite wrecks: the Captain Tony (85 feet), the Sea Emperor (70 feet) with tame Sting Rays, the Ancient Mariner (72 feet), the Captain Dan (110 feet), the Rodeo 25 (130 feet), and the Mercedes (97 feet). On wreck dives, we follow a line down to the wreck and come up the same line at the end of the dive.
Come into our store or call us to book trips to these and other great dive sites. For details on booking trips with us, see the section on Dive Boats.
The boat diving in our area is world class. However, the reefs are too deep for snorkeling. Fortunately we have some great beach sites for snorkeling and even limited diving. For details see the section on Beach Sites.
