Company description Since the 1950s, Captain Hook’s Marina and Dive Center has been the place to get everything you need for a day on the water. Charters for fishing, diving, snorkeling, dive instruction and certification; bait and tackle; scuba equipment and air tanks; boat rentals; snacks and beverages—we have all the supplies you’ll need to enjoy an area celebrated for world-class fishing, diving and all water sports.
Think of us as your concierge in the Keys—besides charters, we’ll help arrange your hotel rooms or vacation rentals, transportation between hotel and marina, take you to the best fishing waters and show you how to catch different fish. Maybe you’re looking for the perfect picnic spot or recreation area for family fun; or you want to know where the food is good (and where it’s not!). Whatever your travel or vacation needs are while you’re in the Keys, Captain Hook’s can help.
Ever seen a voracious, slimy, snake-like eel? How about a stealthy—and toothy—shark? Captain Hook’s Aquatic Learning Center includes a fascinating collection of sea life that you can see for free! Our pond is home to nurse sharks, eels and assorted other sea creatures. Daily feedings occur at 4 p.m., so bring the kids because they’ll love it. School groups, troops and organizations are always welcome!
We are a PADI 5-STAR FACILITY and offer: PADI Full Certification, PADI Open Water Checkouts, PADI specialties including Nitrox, Universal Referral Certification, Discover Scuba experiences for a same-day taste of diving, Reef trips, Dockside air service (including Nitrox), Dockside fuel service, Spear fishing and lobstering.
Fishing mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, amberjacks, redfish, tarpon, hogfish, shark—we could go on and on, but you get the idea. The possibilities are nearly endless for fishing in the Keys. And we’re right in the middle of it all. World class—that’s the style of fishing for which the Keys are known. And whether you hope to fit a quick fishing jaunt into a busy day or you’re planning a full-blown fishing vacation, Captain Hook’s Marina and Dive Center has everything you’ll need.
You can charter Capt. Dan and The Hook, a 33-foot Bertram Sport Fisherman, for offshore and reef/wreck fishing for only $475 for a half day (four hours) of superb fishing. Or why not spend the whole day fishing these fabulous waters? The Hook can be yours for just $750.
Diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating or plain old lounging in the shade of a palm—however you want to spend your time in the Keys, Marathon has it all. And to make your visit easy, we’ll arrange a complete package for you. Our Stay & Play Packages include accommodations along with dive or fishing trips on one of our charters. We’ll customize the package so you get exactly the hotel amenities you want—and exactly the kind of diving trip, instruction or fishing charter you want. After all, Captain Hook’s has been a fixture in the middle Keys for more than 50 years.
For more than 50 years, Captain Hook’s Marina & Dive Center has been an integral part of the Keys fishing and diving community. Naturally we’ve become an essential source of information on the abundant and varied marine life and all the water sports that the Keys are rightly famous for. Check back often to find new information, seminars, clinics and forums devoted to the huge variety of fish species that call these waters home; instruction on selecting the right equipment if you’re interested in fishing for a particular species; news on Keys environmental issues, reef conservation, ecology and local cleanup efforts. We’ll offer news for divers, instruction and reviews of equipment. And we’ll explore the growing popularity of underwater photography using digital cameras.
Location description: We are conveniently located oceanside on the Overseas Highway at the Vaca Cut bridge (MM53), which puts us just minutes from Marathon’s incredible reef and prime fishing waters.
The Florida Keys, with Marathon at its center, offer the best diving in the country for every skill level. If you’re new to diving, this is the perfect place for learning and earning certification from a highly experienced, professional, yet casual staff. For advanced divers, Marathon offers fantastic wrecks, beautiful coral reefs and a mind-blowing assortment of tropical fish to see.
The Thunderbolt was built for the US Army and used by Florida Power and Light as a research ship. It was donated to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and scuttled in 1986 to create an artificial reef. It is 188 feet long and rests upright in 120 feet of water. She is one of the most spectacular wrecks you’ll ever dive on; and, given her size, one dive is never enough. Goliath Grouper are often spotted on this wreck.
Doughnut is a round reef surrounded by sand. Ledges can be found in the middle of the reef as well as around the edges. The gray angelfish can be very friendly. A young hawksbill turtle that cruises the surrounding area often visits the site. Watch for the many rays that bury themselves in the sand surrounding the reef.
Elbow is a nice, colorful reef for divers and snorkelers alike. In the shape of an elbow and forearm, this reef rises to within 10 feet of the surface. Marine life is abundant, with several varieties of reef fish inhabitants and coral species. Brilliant colors.
Coffins Patch has been designated as an NOAA SPA (Special Protected Area). This protection allows for larger fish and a variety of other sea creatures to be viewed on a regular basis. Coffins Patch is made up of a half dozen separate reefs running northeast and southwest that make up over a half mile of reef.
The Gap is a beautiful wall dive with what appear to be larger and greater numbers of sponges and coral life than normal for the area. This area is a great site for seeing some of the deeper water fish like sunshine fish and hamlets.
Horseshoe is a favorite dive for easy navigation and great marine life. The resident nurse sharks are always a delight to see. Named for its shape with some large coral heads on the northeast corner, the Horseshoe is an ideal spot for new divers. Many take advantage of the large, sandy middle section of this site for both skill training and night diving. It’s not uncommon on night dives to find reef octopus as well as numerous types of shrimp and crabs.
Flagler’s Barge was used in building the old 7 Mile Bridge. It now sits in 23 feet of water. This wreck most likely has more coral and fish per square inch than any other site. You never know what to expect as marine creature travel past on their way from the Gulf to the Atlantic.
