Rent one of our Pontoon boats for a dive or snorkel excursion of your own. These well-equipped boats serve as excellent dive or snorkel platforms and can accommodate up to 6 to 8 persons. This is the best way to get up close and personal with the peaceful and sometimes playful manatees.
Want something slower and even more relaxing; try renting one of our glass-bottom kayaks.
Crystal Lodge Dive Center has guided scenic tours of Kings Bay and the Crystal River as well as the near by pristine Rainbow River.
Many people come here to manatee dive and manatee snorkel because of the large Florida manatee population that migrate up into the warm natural spring fed waters that remain a constant 72 degrees all year round.
During the winter month Crystal River boasts the largest Florida manatee population and is the only place in the world that you can swim with the manatees.
A typical manatee snorkel trip starts by suiting up in the manatee dive shop and then loading on to the many pontoon manatee tour boats specially equipped for manatee diving and manatee snorkeling.
As you head out into Kings Bay and the Crystal River, your Captain and tour guide explain what to do and not do during your manatee dive or manatee snorkeling tour.
There are certain off limit areas that are roped off and serve as a sanctuary for the endangered Manatee. You cannot swim with manatee in these special areas.
It is best to buddy up with a partner and check your equipment before heading into the water.
Once you enter the water during your manatee tour, it is recommended to simply relax and float along in an area where the manatee are congregating, any sudden movements or splashing will discourage them from approaching you. Manatees are known to be very docile and friendly. They like to roll onto their side or back so you can scratch their belly. The manatee can be very affectionate and curious, but you should never pursue a manatee, always allow them to seek you out for interaction.
Summer manatee tours are possible.
There is a summer herd of manatees that have taken up permanent residence in Kings Bay.
Location description:
We are located at the Best Western Crystal River Resort in Crystal River Florida, just off U.S. Highway 19.
Crystal River in Citrus County Florida is located on one of the most pristine and undisturbed stretches of the Gulf Coast. In fact the area is called the “Nature Coast†for just this reason. Crystal River Florida is where you go to see “Old Floridaâ€.
The coastal inlets and wetlands that surround Kings Bay and the Crystal River remain much like they would have appeared hundreds perhaps thousands of years ago.
The abundant wildlife are protected here as much of the area is considered a habitat sanctuary.
Here, flocks of cranes and herons fly overhead the schools of fresh and saltwater fish which share the waterways with the Florida manatees and occasional alligator sunning on the banks.
Crystal River is known as the Manatee Capitol of the World. No where else on earth can you do a manatee swim and interact with these gentle sea giants so often associated with the legends of the mermaid.
The abundant natural springs present in this area spew out millions of gallons of water to form the many rivers that flow into Kings Bay and then on to the Gulf of Mexico.
These waters are a constant 72 degrees all year long serving as a haven for the warm blooded Florida manatee during the cool winter months.
There are also manatee snorkel trips available on the Rainbow River, recognized as one of the most pristine waterways in Florida.
Visibility here is often 100 to 150 feet and the wildlife is abundant.
For the more experienced diver there are also many springs to explore.
Catfish Corner – A 4 foot diameter hole, starting in about 15 feet of water and opening into a 10 foot by 20 foot room. The spring derives its name from the hundreds of catfish that live there. An ultraviolet light might be a good accessory to bring along.
Magnolia Springs – Is an entrance to a cave system that supposedly collapsed in 1963 shutting off the cave system. You can still dive to the entrance room which is about 35 feet deep. This is a great place to spot manatee in season and there are many fish in and around the spring. No entry between November 15 and March 31.
Three Sisters – Consists of three small snorkeling springs.
Mullet Spring – Is a series of small springs located about 100 feet east of Big Spring. The flow comes from crevices in the rock bottom. The clear water in addition to the bottom contour offer some great shots to the ultraviolet photographer.
Big Spring or King Spring – The largest and most famous spring. Your boat is anchored in about 5 feet of water that encompasses the spring. The spring is about 75 feet across, dropping down to about 30 feet, where there are two entrances to a cave that goes to a depth of 60 feet and goes back about 50 feet. The ultraviolet photographer will be amazed at the bold cliffs and crevices. Silhouette shots are unbelievable.
