Company description
Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) diving is an extremely satisfying sport. The sights in the underwater world can be breath taking. That`s both literally and figuratively. SCUBA is very safe for trained individuals. It is essential that only trained individuals participate in SCUBA diving. Only certified individuals are allowed to buy air fills. Many vendors also require you to show your certification before they may sell you certain equipment.
Certification Agencies:
To make the sport as SAFE and FUN as possible, various training/certification agencies have been established. They include PADI, NAUI, SSI, YMCA, and others
All MDS training is done with PADI. We are a 5 Star Training Center.

Open Water certification (OW):
This is the basic certification. It consists of about 16 hours of instruction. Usually about 4 two-hour classroom sessions followed by two-hour pool sessions. This is the standard class, however MDS provides special arrangements and private instruction.
The pool sessions teach you the skills you demonstrate on the open water weekend. You are actually diving in the pool. The classroom sessions give you a basic understanding of the following topics:
- The Underwater World
- Adapting to the Underwater World
- The Dive Environment
- Dive Accessories
- Special Dive Tables & Computer Procedures
The open water weekend consists of 4 dives over two days practicing the same skills you learned while you were diving in the pool.
- Mask flooding and clearing
- Regulator recovery
- Ascents/Descents
- Buoyancy (Fin pivots)
- and other skills
Program consists of:
•5 Knowledge Development sessions.
•5 Skills Development sessions in a pool or pool-like conditions.
•4 Scuba dives in open water.
•Earns the PADI Open Water Diver certification enabling you to buy/rent scuba equipment and dive without direct instructor supervision.
Advanced Open Water certification (AOW):
This class is designed to further your SCUBA skills and experiences. There is no formal classroom. This program usually takes place at the dive site with a lecture followed by a practice dive.
Program consists of:
•5 Specialty Dives (Advanced Open Water Diver)
•Emphasis on learning during actual open water dives.
•Each dive credited toward corresponding Specialty Diver program.
•Develops skills in and introduces you to night diving, deep diving, underwater navigation and two to six other specialties you and your instructor choose.

Location description:
Local Diving:
*Pearl Lake is located just south of Beloit IL and is a true gem for fresh water diving in the Midwest. Pearl Lake is privately owned and caters to divers of the Midwest. There are several underwater attractions such as an airplane, a school bus, and others. MDS has contributed to the underwater scene by placing the Lady of the Lake and Wally gator for your enjoyment.
There is an excellent supper club located on the property along with a dedicated swimming area. They have a compressor and limited rental gear available.

There are several training platforms installed. Visibility can reach as high as 50 feet but usually averages 10 - 20 feet on a good summer day.

Camping $25/night with electric (one tent/site 4 people)
Season starts April 17. They are open 7 days a week until Oct. form 8 AM until dark. Night dives can be made but must check out of the grounds no later than 10 PM. After October they are only open on weekends.

*France Park
One of the most popular dive sites in Indiana and is also the home of Spoonbill Stergeon, more commonly known as the Spoonbill Paddlefish (Poloydons Spathula).
The spoonbill is distinguished by its elongated, paddle-like snout. This unusual fish can reach up to 6 feet in length and 200 pounds in weight. The spoonbill is a filter fish and is of particular biological interest as it represents a more primitive group of fishes and has a cartilaginous frame.
There are other underwater objects to hold your interest to include a school bus, a habitat, and a very large flathead catfish usually found in the far back portion of the quarry. Visibility averages 10-20 feet with 30 - on a good day. Maximum depth is 31 feet.
France Park is owned and operated by Cass County Parks & Recreation Department. You must sign in and pay tbe $1.25 park entry fee.

This dive site is the most recent addition to central Illinois dive destinations and a truly fine one.
