Company description
Bay Area Divers wants to provide it`s members with opportunities to dive locally in order to improve their skills and offer affordable scuba dive trips abroad. Our local dives gives new divers the chance to practice and to dive with seasoned veterans. It provides experienced divers a reason to get wet (and we never get enough of that!) If you are a visitor to our site and are in the Houston area, please come to our monthly meeting. It is informative and entertaining.
In 1974, a few members of the NASA Recreational Organization, Frank Resch, Cliff Holloway, Hal Devaney and Tom Rumney, decided to start a dive club for the public and non-NASA personnel. The as yet unnamed club was conceived.
Word spread throughout Clear Lake City that a meeting of the new dive club would be held on the first Wednesday of the month. The turnout was tremendous and over the next few months, the first slate of officers were elected and the first constitution and by-laws hammered out. Bay Area Divers was now a viable organization.
Since that time, Bay Area Divers has grown tremendously and yet still maintains the closeness of the original group. It is an active group of fun-loving divers who are out to have a good and safe time diving. Bay Area Divers has made a favorable mark on the Houston/Galveston area diving community with it`s annual SCUBA divers flea market, frequent dive trips and community programs.
Please feel free to join us at our monthly meetings and have a good `BAD` time!
The club`s purpose is to promote underwater sports by:
- providing educational meeting programs, recreational opportunities and social activities of common interest to the membership;
- promoting maximum safety by educating the membership in safety matters, and by encouraging the membership to conform to the safety standards of their certifying agency;
- organizing educational opportunities for skin and scuba diving, boat and water safety and lifesaving certification courses for the membership and community;
- participating in underwater study and conservation programs;
- offering assistance and education to local governmental authorities in the area of underwater skills and knowledge;
- cooperating with other organizations having the same purpose; and,
- promoting amateur sporting activities for recreational divers.
Single membership is open to any adult. Family membership is open to any family unit. All members must abide by the constitution and bylaws. To be a diving member, a person must present proof of basic scuba diving certification. Diving members may participate in diving activities.
A non-diving member is not certified to dive, and may participate as a non-diver in any club activity. Upon presentation of proof of basic scuba diving certification, any non-diving member can become a diving member.
Location description:
We meet the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Clear Lake Community Building 5001 NASA Parkway.
The Blue Lagoon scuba dive lake in Huntsville Texas opened in September, 1986, as many improvements have been made since then. Lagoon II opened in March, effectively doubling the size of the facility. The operation is designed specifically for divers and especially for dive classes. Non-divers are permitted to come in with divers, but the lagoons are not open to swimmers.
There are three large dive platforms in Lagoon I and a second one has recently been sunk in Lagoon II, for a total of five. There are shelters around both lagoons to provide shade and equipment assembly areas for the dive classes, and gently sloping beaches for easy entry. Dive classes who wish to stay for the whole weekend camp right next to the water. A Huntsville dive store provides tank rentals and air refills. For certified divers, there is a separate area on the far side of Lagoon I that is close to the boat and the rock walls, and has a giant stride entry. Maximum depth in Lagoon I is 35’. The water temperature in the summer is 80-90 degrees.
Although Blue Lagoon is located only 65 miles from Houston, most of the divers so far have come from Dallas. U/W photographer Stephan Myers comes up regularly from Houston to take advantage of the clear water for photography. “Most Houston divers just can’t believe that there can be clear water in a fresh water lake near Houston,†he says, “They probably remember their check out dives and think you have to go to Cozumel for clear water.†Myers appreciates the convenience of the lagoons’ clear water for photography. “It’s a lot easier to test a new technique or a piece of equipment in a place an hour away from home than on Palancar reef,†he added.
Scuba instructors like the convenience of conducting open water certification in clear of water free of competition. “We used to go to Canyon Lake,†Rebecca Tooley, an instructor from Humble, said, “but this is better. At Canyon, there was fishing line in the water, boaters, and crowds. There was more potential for trouble there. You just don’t have that potential here.â€
The secret of the lagoon’s clear water is its low pH. Filtering down through the pine needles covering the surrounding land lowers the pH too low to support the growth of algae. Unfortunately, it is also too low to support fish, but the trade off for clear water is worth it.
To keep the silt on the bottom down, Alan and Richard located a variety of salt grass that would grow in the low pH and have planted it in both lagoons.
The emphasis for the future at Blue Lagoon will be continued improvement of the facility. “We will be sinking more platforms for students and building more entry points,†Alan continued, “We are looking for more wrecks to sink for the certified divers. We have looked at a DC-3 airplane and some other boats as well.â€
For a little taste of Cozumel in the pines, dive Blue Lagoon!
