Company description
Scuba Diving has become one of the most popular outdoor sports in the world. We are proud to have been part of the diving community since the formation of the Caloosa Dive Club in 1970 and are fortunate to live in an area is rich with underwater opportunities. Our membership consists of divers from all walks of life and age groups and a wide variety of interests – the one thing we all share is a love of diving. Our website holds information about the club and the many activities we enjoy throughout the year. Visitors are welcome to our website, our club meeting and special events.
The ChumLines is the official newsletter of the Caloosa Dive Club of Southwest Florida. The editor has a tough job of digging out all the information and fine details that are important to club members and all contributions from club members are gratefully accepted.
Each year the Caloosa Dive Club holds a Spearfishing Competition that begins in March and ends in September. The categories are designed to encourage beginners as well experienced spearfishermen to enter the contest. Prizes are awarded in separate categories and for the diver with the most points at the end of the year, the coveted Top Shooter Award.
Each year the Caloosa Dive Club holds an Underwater Photography Competition. The competition is a fun event that encompasses all levels of underwater photography and even one above water category that highlights club activities from the current year. The categories are designed to encourage beginners as well as world travelers to enter and not only have a chance to win fabulous prizes but to be able to share their hard work with other divers.
Location description:
We love to dive. Caloosa Dive Club Members dive our local Gulf waters regularly as well as the popular Florida Keys. We travel to foreign locations to sample what they have to offer and we plan group trips whenever we can find a dive operation that we like. We walk off beaches, dive from our own boats, dive from charter boats ... we just love to dive.
Sometimes our members remember to tell us all about their recent adventures and when they do, we share it with everyone.
Edison Reef is often overlooked as a good dive site and that`s good for those of us who like to spend a little time there. Edison is actually a big area with piles of rubble from the old Edison Bridge that once crossed the Caloosahatchee into Fort Myers. Some sections are only a few feet high and others are fairly large and include sections of the roadway structure from the bridge.
Since Edison is only 12-15 miles out from Sanibel, it is often adversely affected by the flow of fresh water from the river and the volume of heavy rain during the rainy season but if you catch the tide just right, it can be a fantastic dive. We have been fortunate enough to see turtles gliding along the rubble, seemingly unworried about the presence of divers and there are hundreds of different fish hiding in the nooks, crannies and swim through areas of the structure.
Most people visiting Florida to dive head for the Keys. What they don`t know is how great the diving is on our lesser known Gulf coast. It is harder to get out into the Gulf unless you own a boat but when you do, it`s definitely worth the effort.
Wrecks, artificial reefs, ledges and some of the biggest fish you may ever see in a lifetime - the giant Goliath grouper - more commonly known here as the Jewfish.
You would have to write a book to describe the variety of diving available in our local waters and every time you head out, you will find something new to enjoy.
A favorite wreck but one that is slowly disintegrating into the bottom of the Gulf is the Pegasus. This old tug boat and eventual gambling casino office was sunk as an artificial reef sometime in 1998. In a very short time it was covered in fish life and provided a cozy home to several big Goliath Grouper (Jewfish).
You have to travel quite a ways to see this wreck but it is worth the trip.
