The Big Buddy program is established to provide guidance to new divers and new club members and to provide reinforcement of Basic Open Water training as well as to encourage continuing education for all divers.
Goals
All new divers and club members joining the Emerald Sea Dive Club shall be, after leaving the Big Buddy program, confident in their ability to plan a dive, dive safely, dive within their limits, and will be more effective communicators and good buddies to other divers they will dive with.
Overview
The Program will be administered by the Big Buddy Program Coordinator, which shall be an appointed position. Big Buddies will be volunteers from the ranks of the club membership who will volunteer to take new divers/club members on three dives locally. They will involve the new diver in the planning of the dive, review safe diving practices at the site, at will demonstrate safe diving practices throughout the dive.
Responsibilities
Program Coordinator: The program coordinator will establish a list of big buddies within the club, who are divers that will commit to take a new diver/club member on three orientation dives. The program coordinator will establish the standards for those dives, and develop a training plan which may be used by the big buddies. The program coordinator will assign the new divers/club members to their big buddies, and will monitor the progress of new divers periodically to get feedback on the effectiveness of the program.
Big Buddies: Club members who volunteer as big buddies will be responsible for leading the new divers/club members on three dives, and to help the new diver/club member in planning the dives, demonstrating safe diving practices at all times, and will encourage the new diver/club member to seek continuing education.
Documentation
Big Buddy Packet: This is a document to be generated for the big buddy volunteers. It is a guideline for the dives that they will take the new member on, subjects to be discussed, etc.
New Member Packet: This is a package that will be delivered to the new diver/club member. It will provide information about the Emerald Sea Dive Club, policies and benefits, review information on the basic open water concepts, will encourage continuing education, and will have a section on being a good buddy. This need not be restricted to the Big Buddy program , and should be made available to all new members to the club.
How to be a good buddy
Effective communications, Ask for what you want
Know your limits
Anticipate your buddies needs. Help each other out with equipment, etc.
Watch your air
Do not get separated from your buddy.
Every diver starts at the beginning. None of us are born ready to go diving to 120fsw, in a current, or under other adverse conditions. Knowing your limitations, and not being afraid to abort a dive, or to say you are not prepared for a dive is key to safe diving.
