Company description
The Gavia Scuba club is an independent, nonprofit organization, composed of individual divers. We are not affiliated with any particular dive shop, and do not certify or formally train in SCUBA. We are dedicated to promoting enjoyment, fellowship, safety, and knowledge among scuba divers and those interested in the underwater world.
The objective of this non-profit club is: to bring together persons interested in the sports of skin and SCUBA Diving; to promote the safe and proper use of equipment and techniques used in these sports; to provide a public service to the local, state, national and international communities: to provide members with an opportunity to participate, as a group, in the sports of skin and SCUBA diving; and promote awareness of the marine environment.
We intend to promote diving through the dive shops in the local community in a non-partial manner. In accordance with that objective, GAVIA SCUBA CLUB will not provide any diving certifications and will not engage in the retail sale or rental of SCUBA equipment.
The name ``Gavia`` is the scientific name for the family of birds who are specialized for swimming and diving. This family of birds lives on the water, and includes the loons in North America. These birds spend most of their life diving, sometimes as deep as 100 feet.
The Gavia Scuba Club was formed in 1990, and has grown from about 15 members the first year to an average membership in the last couple years of about 80-90 members. Most members live within a 30-40 mile radius of Cincinnati, Ohio.
This web site was developed for both club members and non-members. For club members we provide common information about the club with easy access, updates to the activities calendar, and a starting point for using the Internet to further our interests in scuba. For non-members and potential members, we wish to provide information about diving in the Greater Cincinnati area, and some background on what the club provides for local Cincinnati area divers. If you are not a member, we invite you to click on the Membership icon above.
Membership in this Club will be voluntary and unrestricted with respect to sex, race, religion, color, or national origin.

Some of Gavia Video Library`s items from this web site are professional videos purchased or donated to the club; others are taken by members or professionally on club member trips. Here is the description of some videos:
*Battle for the U.S. S. Monitor.
This is the story of many battles: the Monitor`s battle with the C. S. S. Virginia, the first clash of ironclads that spelled the end of wooden, sail-powered navies. The Monitor`s battle against the seas that engulfed the, innovative warship only set the stage for its ultimate battle: the ironclad`s inevitable destruction by the corrosive forces of the ocean. Yet while the Monitor disintegrated, its destruction unseen and undocumented, NOAA, the federal agency to whom stewardship over the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary had been entrusted, battled tenaciously against author and underwater photographer Gary Gentile’s unrelenting six-year effort to open America`s most historic shipwreck to the public which owns it. You will share in the excitement of a high-tech scuba dive 230 feet below the Atlantic and will explore around, inside and beneath the shipwreck of the famed ironclad. as the Monitor valiantly carries on its losing battle against the sea.
*British Virgin Islands.
In the 1700`s and the 1800`s the British Virgin Islands were a Mecca for Caribbean trade and commerce, as well as the adventurous pirates who plundered for buried treasure. The legends of yesteryear still linger, but the British Virgin Islands have become known for a different kind of adventurer. Today, the islands beckon those who seek the legendary ``paradise`` for vacations. Your paradise can be quaint hotels or resorts with all the amenities that the British Virgin Islands have to offer. Here crystal blue Caribbean waters wash stretches of white sand beach, where the only footprints are yours. You can charter your own private yacht, with or without crew. and leisurely, cruise to any of the numerous remote islands, where you can experience some of the finest snorkeling and diving in the world, or that secluded getaway for two. Let the fresh sea breezes fill the sails of your yacht, and journey to the British Virgin Islands.
*Cousteau for Roman Plunder
More than a century before the birth of Christ. a vicious storm sank a Roman galley laden with plundered Greek- treasures. For more than 2,000 years this priceless Grecian art has remained in what Jacques Cousteau calls, ``the world`s greatest museum`` the depths of the ocean. In Diving For Roman Plunder. we join Captain Cousteau and the crew of the Calypso as they retrieve art objects from 200 feet beneath the surface; among them the amazing discovery of two rare Grecian bronze statues.
