Patowmack Diver`s Dive Club

Dive Club (English)

Service:
  • Accommodation for Divers
  • Liveaboard Diving
  • Vacation Holiday Scuba Diving
Company description Patowmack Divers is a social group of people with a common interest: SCUBA DIVING! The principal purposes of this scuba diving club are: diver continuing education, safety, research, travel, and social. Other activities of interest to the members will be encouraged.
The club is a nonprofit organization. Our members are male and female, from 20`s to mid 60`s, and from all walks of life. Our diving experience ranges from recently certified to “old salts”; from warm water photographers, to deep wreck technical divers, and cave divers.
Patowmack Divers arranges several dive trips per year to locations off Virginia and Maryland seashores, Outer Banks, NC, and other great dive sites in the United States, the Caribbean, and beyond. We also schedule local “Tune-Up” dives in local pools and quarries. Group purchasing power allows us to enjoy discounts on charters, rentals, and accommodations. We are also active in preservation, research, and environmental protection. We take full advantage of the aquatic expertise in the DC metro area for speakers at our meetings, including such diverse topics as Underwater Archeology, Reef Ecology, Treasure Hunting Expeditions, and Aquarium setup and operations.
The Patowmack Divers normally meet at 7:30pm at an area restaurant. Lately, we have been meeting at Traditions Restaurant at the Holiday Inn, 625 First Street, Alexandria. That`s on the north side of town just a couple of blocks before the parkway. We reserve the large room in the back. There is street parking available and also parking in the Giant Food Store parking lot across the street. If the meeting location changes, we will update this information as soon as possible.
All persons 15 years of age or older, interested in scuba diving are eligible to apply for membership in the club. Bring the completed application along with your checkbook to the next meeting and a club officer will go over membership dues and other details of membership. Once you`re a member, you will be added to the Patowmack Divers group email list. Members will receive notification of meetings, trips, parties, outings, etc. See you at our next meeting!

Larry Gordon will talk about his trip to the Galapagos. He will show his pictures and Ann McGrath`s video.
Larry says, ``The trip was all highlights. We saw many spotted eagle rays, a giant manta ray, big stingrays, and a great variety of fish, to include king angelfish, cornetfish, a huge school of pelican barracuda, Moorish idols. hawkfish, Pacific seahorses, red-lipped batfish, scorpion fish, and fine-spotted moray eels. There were also bottlenose dolphin, green sea turtles, sea lions, penguins, sally lightfoot crabs, nudibranchs, and a variety of sea stars. However, the highlights of the highlights were white-tip reef sharks, schools of big Galapagos sharks, huge schools of scalloped hammerheads, and enormous whale sharks. On the land excursions we saw sea lions, marine and land iguanas, lava lizards, giant Galapagos tortoises, and a variety of birds. We even saw a school of orcas feeding on something (this last was from the boat, not diving with the feeding orcas). Finally, a volcano erupted for the first time in 200 years.``

*Mona Island, Puerto Rico
Club members spent a week on the Nekton Rorqual diving around Mona Island, which some call the Galapogos of the Caribbean. Mona is located between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
*We are currently planning dive trips to other destinations including: West Palm Beach, California, Florida, Caribbean, Lake Rawlings, Hatteras, Virginia Beach, and a possible live-aboard. Location description: Recent Trips:
*Morehead City, NC
We made our annual dive trip to ``Wreck City`` also known as Moread City. Water temperatures were in the low 80s and visibility approaching 80-100 feet! We`re planning our return for 2006.
*Pasta Pig Out
OK, it was not a dive trip, but it`s almost as fun! The 2005 Annual Pasta Pig Out was hosted by the Gordons.
*La Parguera, Puerto Rico
On our trip to La Parguera, Puerto Rico where we dove with La Parguera Divers. Puerto Rico is an undiscovered dive destination. Diving around Puerto Rico is largely undiscovered. Diving on the north shore around San Juan is not exciting, but the other areas such as the southwest are great. Water temperature was around 80 degrees and the visibility was a little under 100 feet. We saw a variety of critters including the usual suspects such as angels and nurse sharks. There were also sitings of octopus, squid and shrimp. We did 12 dives during the days plus 2 night dives.
There was also some excellent snorkling around mangrove islands.
*Cozumel
We did 15 dives (1 night dive) while in Cozumel. Our day off was spent in Tulum and Playa del Carmen. El Foco is now the official purveyor of Patowmack Divers. A good time was had by all!
*Virginia Beach
Although the seas were a tad rough and the boat ride long, Eric D., Eric S., Guilhem M., Bob B., and Dave O. made it out to the Eureka and had relatively warm waters and decent vis, albeit we were buffeted by a 1-1.5 kt current. Some of us need to get scooters :) !
*Morehead City, NC
Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Isabel, this trip was blown out :( . However, we have rescheduled and are headed back to Morehead City on Oct 11-12! We are diving with Olympus and hope to get in at least 2 good days of diving over the Columbus Day weekend.
*California Kelp Forest Dives
We went diving with Psalty Adventures, an outfitter out of San Pedro, CA. We flew out Friday, stayed on the boat that night and headed off for a three day cruise in the morning. The boat is a fast six-pack, and we visited some prime dive sites around Catalina Island. October is lobster season in California, so we might partake in that too. I`ve got a really good lobster recipes. Water temperatures were in the mid-60`s.
