Company description
The purpose of the Club is to promote SCUBA diving, provide underwater educational programs and recreational activities. We hold a monthly meeting with marine-related programs, arrange dive trips, sponsor water-related social activities and have social gatherings for the whole family. We raise money to support our club expenses and to make donations to groups such as DAN (Divers Alert Network), Mote Marine and other community projects.
During 1964, a group of divers in Venice formed the Venice Grouper Snoopers. In October 1965, the name was changed to the Venice SCUBA Diving Club. The Club became incorporated as a nonprofit organization on October 17, 1967. During the early years, the meetings were held in the member’ homes in both Sarasota and Venice. In the late 1970’s, as the membership expanded to include divers from Manatee county, the meetings were moved to the FOP Hall in Sarasota. In 1995, the name was changed to the Sarasota SCUBA Club, Inc
As a member you will meet other divers who share your interest in the sport and the marine environment. There is the opportunity to find a “buddy†for sea or land, and to learn about all aspects of diving. Since our activities include the family, your non-diving spouse or significant other need no longer feel left out when you talk about your SCUBA friends. Also, you will receive our monthly newsletter, a membership packet and, best of all, have fun!!
SARASOTA SCUBA CLUB DIVE POLICY
All dive trips organized by the Sarasota Scuba Club are for the benefit of Club members and, on a space available basis, sponsored guests. To participate in a SSC sponsored dive trip, the members dues must be paid up-to-date. All participants will sign an SSC waiver and divers will provide their certification information for each trip.
Any certified diver under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If not, then a notarized consent form and release for the minor diver to dive with a designated accompanying adult must be provided along with the SSC Waiver.
No cancellations will be accepted after 45 days prior to Florida dive trips and 60 days prior to all other dive trips, unless the Trip Manager stipulates otherwise.
Every SSC sponsored trip will have a minimum of one SSC member in charge of planning and organizing each trip. The Trip Manager must be going on the trip and will be minimally responsible for the following:
a) Schedules dates and establishes pricing.
b) Make reservations at the appropriate hotel-resort, dive operation, etc.
c) Complete a trip profile to be published in the SSC newsletter.
d) Maintain a roster of trip participants including emergency contact information.
e) Provide a complete trip itinerary including: date, time, location, directions, map, etc.
f) Collect all payments (checks payable to SSC) and forward to SSC Treasurer or make arrangements for credit card payments. Treasurer must receive sufficient funds to cover all deposits or payments prior to such payments being made. The Board must approve payments or cancel trip if sufficient funds have not been collected.
g) Collect all waivers and certification information from all participants (diver and non-diver).
h) Submit a trip cost accountability sheet to Treasurer/Board.
i) If a Trip Manager is unable to go on a dive trip, an alternate must be appointed.
j) Assist members (with Board if necessary) to resolve grievances between member participant and trip vendor(s).
When a trip in whole or in part has been cancelled, the Dive Committee will determine the refund amount, the Club Treasurer then pays refunds. In no case will a member receive a refund unless the Club receives a refund.
In order to minimize schedule conflicts, either the Club President or Dive Committee Chairman must approve all dive trips that are not sponsored by the Club before the trip can be announced at a Club meeting or advertised in the newsletter.
Location description:
Artificial reefs have been constructed in Sarasota County to increase and enhance recreational fishing and SCUBA diving areas as well as to create and restore marine habitat lost to coastal development. These reefs support marine life and decrease user pressure on natural reefs. Remember to use proper catch and release fishing practices.
Avoid propeller cuts through seagrass beds. These scars take five to ten years to heal. Seagrass beds are vital nursery areas providing food and shelter for fish and other marine life. Please use extreme caution in shallow waters.
Please be aware that manatees inhabit our waters. The Florida manatee is a gentle, harmless creature who lives on a diet of aquatic plants. Although a protected species, many are killed or injured each year through human carelessness with motor boats.
Due to variations of LORANs of different makes, LORAN coordinates are precise only 60-120 feet. To find a specific site, navigate to the coordinates and mark the spot with a weighted float. Then search, using depth profile equipment, in an outward spiral to find the reef. Please do not tie to buoys.
As much as we all love to SCUBA dive, thousands of people come to Florida to fish. Over the years, as development began its encroachment on the coastline, marine habitats were threatened. In 1989, to provide funds for marine enhancement, enforcement and research, the Florida Legislature enacted a law requiring saltwater anglers to have a valid fishing license. This went into effect at the beginning of 1990. Just a few years ago, not one southern state required a saltwater fishing license. Today, six of the nine coastal states in the southern U.S. require them. If you`re not sure weather you need a saltwater fishing license, this should help end your confusion. According to Florida law, you must posses a Florida Saltwater Fishing License, ``if you take, attempt to take, or posses marine fish for noncommercial purposes.
In addition size and bag limits along with closed seasons, have been put into effect to allow species to effectively spawn and maintain the fish population.
